too cool. Might look at the frame closer see how bad off it is.

use a small chisel and a hammer...see what you find. Might be worth swapping it to a new frame. Which in the end is less work the dealing with a rusty frame. Trust me.

check around the rear spring hangers on the inside, and the front spring hangers on the inside...also look up and double check where the tranny crossmember bolts on. All areas the go becuase of rust...and can make for an unsafe rig.

I spent prob 3 years replacing little bits of the frame here and there. I had a enough of it and swapped to a new frame and it was truthfully less work than dealing with grinding, welding on a rusty frame.

The resto is looking killer man, keep up the good work.

Hey does your donor vehicle still have a working choke cable and if so would you sell it?

Like everyone else said - WOW, that's a big project, congrats on doing it. A few questions though, if the donor vehicle had so many good parts why not use it as the primary truck?
Also this would be the perfect time to change the design that Toyota made and get rid of the problem spots where water gets trapped.
Hope everything turns out! Can't wait to see the finished truck.

Uh, Mudders are not the most sensitive bunch, but you should know that it is pretty universal to refer to vehicle rust as "cancer". But, sorry to hear that you apparently have a loved one dealing with the "Big C". I wish them (and you) well.

back on point:
I (like Texx) do not like the wood sides. They belong only on a late 70's through early 80's American made station wagon (not on a SUV called a "wagon"). And on the Heep Wagoneer, already mentioned.

I vote to paint that with a nice color instead of the wood decal--as if there was vote called for on this...

And, as for you being a moron, you're in good company. I paid $8,500 for my HJ60 with major rust in the drip rails and on the windshield frame. I bought a sawzall and drove 6 hours to Atlanta to tear the roof off of a FJ62 that was being parted out--for $300. I have NO idea yet what I might have to pay for a good welder to do this roof swap.

One definition of cancer is
Code:
something evil or malignant that spreads destructively
. We are on a board that deals with Land cruiser tech issues so I think the title is fine.

Fantom,

It would have been way too much work to replace all the stuff that was stripped from the donor vehicle prior to me buying it.
Lowtide, the front hangars have zero rust. the frame rust is confined to the rear spring hangers back.

more updates. Getting pretty close to paint prep, the metal work should be done this weekend.

More Pics, Im having serious cruiser withdrawl. This project has taken about 3 times longer than I had anticipated but the results should be excellent. Were real close to painting, door jams have already been cut in, final prime is done on the sides and just finishing up taking all the dings out of the hood. I'll post some nice high res pics of the final product when I actually get the rig back.

Wow Dude,

It is coming along nicely, if you could post up some pics of the final prep before paint, I would be greatful.

Its gonna be sweet!

yeah, both rear quarters were rusted through at the inner fender well. The rear drivers side door was toast as was the front passenger door and right rocker was rusted out. All were replaced with rust free parts from an 87 donor cruiser you see pictured earlier in the thread. anything that was questionable was cut out and replaced. Got rid of the goofy dealer option ugly mirrors and whent with real Toyota FJ62 mirrors (non powered)

Most of the folks on this board wanted me to keep the Wood grain and they actually had me convinced to put it back on until I started looking around. the Stickers just dont hold up well to the Sun and the weather and end up looking like dog $h_t after a year or two, so she's going to go back to the way she rolled off the assmebly line, White.
