I'm damn glad us 55 guys don't have to worry about this s***! Where's Inkpot when you need him? :flipoff2:

At least we all have bezels. There are many FJ40 deprived people in the world who would love any kind of a bezel...

Esthetically, it should go down, that's the way pictures are matted. but as mentioned, the TOYOTA badge on the grill is centered with the thick part up.

But a landscape should have 1/3 ground and 2/3 sky.

I drove for a few years upside down. Really thought about it when I put it back on after the restoration. As I recall, I thought you would get better airflow into the radiator with the thick side down. Didn't know I was wrong till I saw a stamped bezel.

I've been thinkin my '60 is jealous of my '40, so I might give it a bezel too and see if that helps.:hhmm::p I'll be sure and post it when I do.:D

personally i really have to say that it looks better upside down:meh:.Whos to say that toyota didnt make flippable part for a reason? or maybe they just flipped a coin to decide orientation...either way i dont buy the logo centering b.s.:flipoff2:

If you install the "BEZEL" thick side up,....it hides the hood release lever,...

I see mention of the bezel hiding the hood release lever when it's fat side up. On all my 40s the hood release lever is above the left headlight, several inches away from the bezel, and is only reachable when the spring latch on the left side is undone and you lift up the hood until it contacts the hood release hook.

I don't see what bezel orientation has to do with the hood release lever.

the bezel police hammered me when i posted my first pic of my 40. all i could say is what the hell is the bezel? i know a bezel is basically a peace of metal to cover up space, then i was thinking what is wrong with you people you have no lives :) but now i know what way it goes and i am keeping mine upside down to drive you all nuts.

Hehe, I had to go check and make sure the pics I posted had the bezel correct, LOL!

X2 ! The only way my bezel gets in the way of the hood latch is if I take the bezel off and lay it on one of the front fenders! LOL!

What is this hood latch you speak of? I guess the boys in Japan left that off. Or it could be that I have a mix of parts on my rig...

he's talking about the "hood safety latch" early cruiser were lacking them...and 1st time you drive away and forget your hood side hooks...you'll wish you had one.

late 73 they came out...and 79 they changed to a different style

73-78 latch pull is accessed under the bezel and is hidden under bezel...a bent bar ...from what i remember.

79-84 is a bit different.

this is going from memory...i could be off...i didnt pay too much attension to it...my original hood/bib has been long gone and i use a early split hood and bib...that has no safety latch on the bib.

some body with a late 73-78 could probably conferm this...as i am not 100% sure

found a pic and you can see the "Safty Latch" ...pic borrowed from webelk6 here on mud...this is what they looked like from late 73-end of 78.

as you can see ojaij40 is correct...there are many differences between cruisers...some not as obvious as others
