I know that this will sound funny for you but I have never had an AT vehicle. I know that D is for driving and N is neutral. But there is also P and probably other stuff.

I know nothing about it and would be glad for any basics on when I can or can't switch to a specific lever position or how to check for any signs of problems with the tranny.

Thanks a lot and don't laugh as all my trucks have always been 5spd manual and AT is in general not popular in Europe.

Mike

*typing w/ a serious face* ;)

P - PARK, transmission is locked
R - REVERSE, vehicle can be powered backwards
N- Neutral, engine running, transmission not engaged
D- DRIVE, normal driving conditions
2- DRIVE, 2nd gear for bad weather and towing start from stopped position
1- DRIVE, lowest gear for driving

for ther most part, throw your rig into D (DRIVE) for forward driving and R (REVERSE) for driving backwards.

Don't forget Park when your stopped.

Also Nuetral when you shift the Transfercase (little stick to right) in and out from High to Low

It's nice to have a visitor from Poland. No worries about your question and NO ONE will give you a hard time here.

cheers!

Mike,
In the USA, Lexus will send the Owner's Manual (OM) to anyone that buys a used Lexus. I don't know if this will cover you in Europe but you can give it a try. Go to the Lexus web site for details.

I am sure someone with a Lexus will be happy to e-mail you an electronic copy of the OM for your proposed purchase. Several have downloaded the OM from the TIS web site (Romer, NorCalDoug, Raven?) and I don't think this would be a copyright violation since Lexus wants you to have the OM and you can get them to send you a hard copy at no cost to you.

The OM will cover the Automatic transmission, locking differentials, hi/lo transfer case, and everything else that you would need to know to operate the vehicle. The OM is a small booklet that is included with the purchase of a new vehicle and usually kept in the glove box.

Your Lexus is likely similar to my '96 Land Cruisers. It has a 4 speed automatic. The "overdrive" 4th gear may be hiding from you.

Walking the gears UP.
L1 - Just Low gear. Use this if you don't want the transmission to shift out of low.
L2 - Starts in Low, then will shift to 2nd if appropriate.
D - Starts in low, then will shift to 2nd or 3rd if appropriate.
N - Neutral. Vehicle will roll front or back depending on grade.
R - Reverse. Look behind you. Thats where you're going.
P - Park. Trany locks out the forward/reverse motion. Caution, doing this on a hill can be a real bad idea as the locking gear may not dissengage if under torque.

O/D (Overdrive). There are two buttons on the left side of the automatic transmission shifter. The big one lets the shifter move. There is a little tiny button under it about 5mm diameter. When pushed in this allows the truck to enter overdrive when the shifter is in D (drive). When this button is out it restricts D (drive) to 3 gears. When it is pushed in you have 4 gears.

Another bit... Automatic transmission vehicles in North America only start in P (park) or N (Neutral). If the key won't turn, don't force it. Your steering wheel may be locked. Pull left or right on the steering wheel and you should be able to then turn the key IF the transmission is in P or N.

There is also a shifter lock out button on the shifter console forward and left.

Thanks Raven!! Hopefully, when schlopecki reads this he will PM you Mike's e-mail address so he can print the OM before he drives the 5 hours to go look at it on Friday morning.

Not on a 91-92 (A440F).

2 = second gear, period. Starts there, stays there.

3 = first through third (no overdrive). Good for around town.

D = all four.

Curtis

Are you sure about the second gear on the A440F working that way? I've never heard of a transmission where that is the case however I've never driven a A440F. On every transmission I've ever used 2nd means start in 1st and will shift into 2nd but no higher.

The OM would be a nice thing to have when looking at a vehicle, especially one from overseas that is not common in ones area.

On the LX he is looking at it is the A343 transmission, but it is still the same,

In "L" the trans is limited to just first gear only,
In "2" the trans is limited to first and second gear,

the A343F differs from the A440F/A442F in that there is a second start button that will lock out first gear, the trans will start in second gear, but you must hit the button it does not automatically happen when you put the gear selector in "2"

Never thought much about any of this, but remember you also may need to step on the brakes to get out of Park and it may need the key in for that. There is also a little rubber plug next to the shifter that you may use something to poke in if the shifter gets locked up.

after all this, one should note that ATs are great, much easier to drive around in in town, and great in the dirt too...

Welcome brother! I was gettin' kind of lonely...:D

100% sure.

Been discussed a lot on the 3FE list, and after posting up this morning, I even verified it again on my way to work.
