Oil warning light on, oil level good...what's my issue?

I'm a Land Cruiser newbie so go easy on me...

My oil warning light has been coming on over the past week on my 1994 FJ 80. Well, it comes on briefly and then goes off. I checked the oil level and I'm still near the top of the F line on the dipstick so I'm not sure why it's coming on.

Yesterday I whipped a U turn on a quiet street but couldn't quite make the turn all they way so I popped it in to reverse quickly and then the vehicle shut down. I put it in park and tried to turn the key to start it but got nothing. After about 10 seconds of waiting I tried again and it just cranked for 5 seconds without starting. I waiting another 10 seconds and then it started up. Not sure what happened but am thinking (in my ignorance) that it could be related to the oil warning light. Is there some safety that shuts the motor off if it thinks the oil is too low? Could my quick turn have caused the oil to jostle just enough to trigger the safety? Could it be a faulty sensor or an oil pump that needs replaced?

Any one have experience with this issue?

I should remark that I read the thread from early last week about the oil warning light being on even though oil isn't low. My bigger issue is that the vehicle shut off and didn't want to start again. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about that/if it's related to the oil warning light.

In regards with the oil warning light, I have the same issue. I simply add a liter even if it’s on higher end of the dipstick and it’s all good until the next oil change. It has been like this for years.

Having operated my 94 on very angles of every kind I don’t think the oil light has anything to do with your no start issue.

I am not aware of any link between the oil level sensor and a safety no start/run feature. Here is where I would go to diagnose the no start condition.

Sounds like a power source issue.
Battery connections; fusible links; etc.
The oil level lamp is completely unrelated to anything other than the oil level sensor in the pan. All it does is light the dash lamp.

Thanks, everyone. This is super helpful. Now I can disregard the warning light and get on with it. I'll troubleshoot using that one thread. I'll check back in if/when I figure out what's going on.

Ok, here's an update on my "progress" so far.

The only issue I could find after reading the thread posted above about emergency troubleshooting issues was that I had a corroded AM1 fuse-the 50amp one. I replaced it with a new fuse but my problem persists.

The problem has come into better focus, however. Here's what happens: the LC starts just fine, drives just fine, but once per trip I take it out on it shuts off after I've been sitting at a red light. When the light turns green I take my foot off the brake and put it on the gas pedal only to have the vehicle shut off. The power remains on, so I put on my hazards, put it into park, and then restart it. Sometimes it takes cranking more than once before it starts. But then it starts up and drives away like it doesn't have an issue.

When I try to recreate the problem on my own I can't do it.

Thoughts? Fuel delivery issue?

Do you have a trailer light circuit connector wired into the harness?

Have you checked all of the simplest things first as @jonheld pointed out above. I had similar sort of problems (stalling out... no start... not the oil light) in my 62. It ended up being the terminal connection at the negative battery post. Absolutely my fault for not tightening it properly. When I sorted that connection out, all of the no-start/stalling stuff ended.

Thanks. Going to go back over all the connections now. Sucky part is you only know it's fixed when...you drive it and it stops shutting off on you. Makes every red light that much more exciting.

Don't know. Going to check now.

Couple ideas for you. First is always a fusible link issue with starting. They’re cheap and easy to install as a precaution. Second on the oil light my guess is it’s this- 8949160010 Toyota Sensor Engine Oil Level. I had an intermittent oil light and this was the culprit. Hope it helps.

Ok, back with an update:

I replaced the fusible link over the weekend, tightened all connections to the battery, and confirmed that there is no trailer wiring hooked up. I drove it once without it shutting off...but I think I have an idea what's up now: fuel delivery issue. It got bogged down early on in my test trip and that hasn't happened yet. A fuel issue seems to be the most likely problem in my inexperienced opinion. Does anyone know of good threads for fuel pump, filter, etc. fixes?

I know of a good service manual.

Why would you trust the opinion of someone you don't know, over the advice and recommendations of the people who built your truck?

For sure use the FSM
But I also find seeing someone else do it is helpful ! I even like to watch videos before and during some projects.
A picture is worth a thousand words
I fully understand you need to confirm what you’re watching is correct.

I also like to use google to search Cruiser stuff.
It almost always circles me back to a Mud thread 😎

For sure, the search function here leaves something to be desired

Id start with the easy / cheap stuff first. Fuel filter is pretty high on the cheap/easy scale. From there try running a quality injector cleaner like redline with the PEA additives and a spirited drive. If that doesn’t help then could be the pressure regulator. The fuel pump isn’t a fun job! Good luck and RTFM 👍
