napa gold will only cost you about $5

back to topic, thats not a oil mess you have, try leaving the old gasket on when you put on the new filter, i did this on my wife 4runner and ended up with 5 quarts of fresh oil on the floor, new oil doesnt wipe up like used oil

ewwww get that frame off there!!

I am at about $50 per oil change - - walmart M1 - one gallon and then 3 quarts of M1 to finish, NAPA (wix) oil filter.

My '97 the dealer double-gasketted the oil filter, it cost them an engine. That was in '97, so it wasn't cheap. My '03 the dealer filled it over 2inches above the full mark. It cost them a few grand as they replaced the torque converter, analyzed and swapped parts for a couple days trying to find the source of the vibration.

I'll change my own, thanks. I am considering it for my company lease car, company pays for it anyway. Neighbor kid is working at Pennzoil where we have an account. I might have him drive it to work and charge it to my company, that's pretty darn convenient.

One thing that will help is to let the rig sit for a couple of days..... like a weekend.

Oh yea, brake cleaner is your friend:clap:

Also flip the filter up when taken off, reduces the amount of spill out.

Don't skimp on the filter when a Napa gold is only $2 more and usually just as available.

Don't let your dealer change the oil. I'm generalizing here but, as mentioned above, you'll get over or under filled just like at Jiffy lube.

A quote from a dealer's oil service tech once upon a time: "8 quarts? That can't be right." They added 5. Sheese!

We use disposable plastic shopping bags, put it down around the filter, unscrew it [we always drain hot oil here, faster, and more oil out]and catch the oil coming out of the filter in the plastic bag.

A quick wipe around the area, ensure the o ring has come away with the filter, oil the o ring on the new filter, to make sure it has one, and fit the new filter back on.

I wrap a newborn diaper around the filter. That catches most of it, but not all.

Karl

Exactly what I do. If you are patient, you can get it all.

Thats a great idea Darren. Those bloody plastic bags are usefull for something! I'll give it a try when i next drop the oil.

I save an empty oil carton from a previous oil change and cut the top off to form a mini oil pan. It catches most but not all. I guess some towels would help.

I sure wouldn't use a diaper - those little gems cost 25$ a box!!:bang:

I just use the soak pads that I get from a friend that works at the Electric Power company, I let the filter drain for at least half hour (mean time some rum and coke ). Then I pull the filter (more rum and coke ) and fill the truck with Mobil One 10W30 and Mobil One oil filter. For the oil change that I do myself I spend $48.00 for the oil and $10.00 for the filter. I do this every 6 months since I don't use the truck daily.

Similar to cactuscruiser I just put a funnel under it and unscrew a little, let it drain for minute or so and there is little mess.

Is the filter upside down on the R side of the engine (as on an FJ62)?

IF SO, punch a hole in the top of it (sharpened screwdriver) & let it drain while you drain the pan. The longer you wait, the more oil will drain back into the engine & the less in the filter.

This method works great on my 3FE!

Then just use a used one. :flipoff2:

Best thing I have found for all of my vehicles is TIN FOIL. Just take about a foot long sheet of tin foil and tuck it up under the filter, then crease the lower end into a little valley and it works great, oil flows right into the pan. Appy new filter then remove tin foil. JT
