I have a 69 FJ40 with a 76 2f without the oil cooler and where I live I need to drive at least an hour to get to any trails and I don't have acess to a trailer and truck.

I have the stock 3 speed which is less than ideal for the highway but my question is if a oil cooler is necessary. I've heard the stock one basically just keeps it at the same temp as the coolant. But right now if I drive on the freeway where I'm at 2300-2500 rpms for a whIle when I'm stopped at an idle my oil pressure drops slightly. Is this normal? I'm running 20w-50 and want to preserve what seems to be a healthy running 2f for as long as I can.

Do you drive it on the highway much? I'm just worried about the oil heating up and breaking down.

My '77 never had an oil cooler on it. I drive the back roads of GA as much as possible, but do get up to 55 or 60 regularly.

As for you being worried about the oil, use the search and you'll find a vast array of opinions on the oil cooler. Thus, I'm not offering an opinion.

Yeah I've read a few of the opinions. Are there any aftermarket options for oil coolers? I haven't seen any. I'm thinking something that has its own radiator like you see on some newer stuff.

my opinion is that you don't need an oil cooler, there are how many of these engines running in much harsher enviroments than you on the highway, in the deserts of Africa and in the middle of Australia.....you're worried about nothing

Yeah your probably right I just want to do everything I can to make it last as long as possible besides not using it.

It is normal for the oil pressure to drop at a stop after a sustained run up to speed(45 or greater mph--assuming your idle is normal-~650 rpms). During normal operating(>1000 rpm), the oil psi should hold at ~ 52 psi(that's the relief valve setting). After a run such as this, if you stop for a light, or whatever, at idle the pressure should hold at at least 40 psi--if you sit there for a while(enough to let the engine cool some)--the pressure should rise back to the 50 psi range.
Your oil visc is a little high, in my opinion--try 10W-30

That's good to know. I'm also going based off the factory oil pressure guage so it's not the most acurate reading in the world.

Did you see the oil filter cooler advertised in the classifieds? Takes about 7 degrees off oil temp for $20.
