New one on my engine as well. They get clogged up with sludge over the years, ya you can get them cleaned out pretty good but I like new parts on my new engine.
FYI, if you buy a new cover it comes with the check valves and related parts.

would the degreaser and the ultrasonic cleaner strip the hardware of their protective properties?
If you leave it over night it might. One or two five minute cycles and a rinse in fresh water has never been a problem for me.
I was crazy enough to pick one up for $335. I've read that some builders won't warranty unless you replace it, fearing some trapped bit of metal will escape and wreak havoc...
Not anymore. Mine came with zip. Fortunately the bits and bobs are not expensive.
For future searches: for the 1FZFE there's a bare oil cooler cover (15721-66010) that is just the cover, no extra bits.
And there's an oil cooler cover sub-assembly (15701-66010) which comes complete with the valves, springs, etc:

NOW you tell me…
I have my exhaust manifolds off right now to fix a manifold and downpipe leak as well as replacement of downpipe, cats, essentially the entire exhaust, lol. Thinking that I should do this while its accessible. My main question is, do I need to drain the coolant and or oil from the system to do it, or can I leave that in? I just flushed the radiator and changed the oil so I want to avoid that if possible.
When sitting oil drains down into the pan and this is above the pan so don't have to drain. Might be some residual but shouldn't be much

For coolant it's a lower point in the system so some of that will drain
I guess I might as well also replace the thermostat while doing this as well. I just purchased this and not sure when it might have been replaced last.
Did the oil cooler job yesterday. Wow, glad I did that as it was in bad shape. Besides being filthy with corrosion, the piston that moves up and down with the spring was seized in the housing. Did the thermostat as well. Lost a lot of coolant, lol, so will need to refill once I get my exhaust done.
