For 2/17/06 at my shop

tentatively 4 sets being made

I measured up my truck this morning. I think the 2x6 idea will work.

The first pic is the tape right up against the pinch weld

The second is the end of the tape at a reasonable distance from the weld to allow debris to get between the truck and the slider and not look too goofy.

Ok, well that changes everything. I'm ok going with our original idea of the 2x6. That would certainly make the bolt on tube rail w/ kickout a better idea. Since you did the measurements and it looks like it would work, I'm in for the 2x6. Andre seemed like he was going to go with the 2x6 regardless, so it's up to Kenton and Ernest if there onboard as well.

You're probably correct for most applications, but we're trying to more or less make a running-board-like slider with no tube hoop. We're toying around with a bolt-on hoop w/ kickout for when wheeling, and a plain unobtrusive step-like slider for DD use.

why not just plate the step in https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=130975
3/16 or 1/8" works great for this

What's the difference in running 2x4 and outriggers and plates vs. running 2x6 and no outriggers?

Your steps would stick out further and give you easier entrance and exit and better protection, but at the cost of a wider rig.

sez the guy that tagged a shop car pretty good with his slider kick out today.:o

I'm up for either. The big fab time is on the frame braces and those will be the same regardless.

ok, just re-read :o

the part about "no tube hoop"

alot more work to add the tubes and top plate, but i would believe that it will weigh less....like thats an issue ;)

use tube on your outriggers coming off the frame, cheaper and stronger.

I'm in for 2 x 6. I like the idea of more internal volume if I ever decide to tap the sliders and use them as airtanks.

2x4 rec is about a buck cheaper than 1.5 tube, but I agree it would be easier. Not as elegent, but that's a matter of taste. I prefer pure utility myself.

It's funny you posted that link 2bad. That was my original idea I was thinking of, until Gumby came up with the 2x6 idea. I basically need a step to get in for the :princess: but it has to be something strong I can beat up a bit off road if need be. That was my only criteria besides it not looking all goofy.

I'm still up for either one, Todd. The other guys probably are more particular than I am, so I'll go with the concensus. But, for the record, I like the look of 2bad's. ;)

Ok, well I kind of sold my self on the 2x4's, but we can start with the other two sets and see how they look, and then I can make up my mind for sure. :) If I have to come back out another day to finish mine up, I don't mind - not in too much of a hurry for them.

Thanks again for all your help and guidance - in advance.

Ya'll mind if I come on by and watch ya'll put these suckers together. They might let me out that weekend. I'm damn jealous. Have a good one.

me too, I could lend a hand!

Looking for nicer running board parts for my 80,just in case anybody is throwing things out.
Mine will be a mall cruiser for now cos of grandma and 2 kids.
Bump!

I'm a little slow, here's another doodle to see if I understand. Are these the choices we're talking about, A) 4x2 with a tube outrigger, or B) 6x2?
And, am I going to volunteer to print 4 copies of George's patterns?

Although Rob had me sold on the 4x2 route at the bar, now that I'm sober, I'll stick with the 6x2. Quicker, cheaper, simpler, functional, stronger(?), and uglier. Oh and also, bolting on a tree-pusher-outta-the-wayer sounds good too. :)

We're meeting 8am on Saturday the 17th, at Naperville Central auto shop right? I'll bring breakfast, name your McDonalds favorite.
If I can't find the arches, I'll bring BK breakfasts.

I'm for diagram B. I would like the 2x6 because I keep thinking I would tap the sliders and use it as an aux air tank, I just have to figure out a way to drain moisture out without having a valve stick out the bottom to get knocked off. I also like the idea of the bolt on kickouts because I have seen how handy it is to have.
