Emission testing changes for ’07?

I have heard from a few people that vehicles older than 1995 will not have to test anymore in Illinois. I did a short search on their website and came up no changes that I noticed.

Is this good news or are we in for other restrictions? And is it even true?

Very true. I had to pass gas w/ the FJ55 (de-smogged) in December then found that I was exempt from here on out after I passed. It seems that once you pass you're considered exempt - but you do have to pass.

Very good cruiser karma in deed.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and check out RT's EGR thread and fix it once and for all.

On a side note Todd, I'm still interested in building some sliders and also taking a trip down to
Attica. You have any free Saturdays or Sunday's coming up in the next month or two?

80 sliders

Sounds good. I'll figure out my schedule and let you know. Thanks!

If you're talking about sliders on your '80, I need them too, so we can make two at once (economies of scale?) and I'll help (or at least, stand around and laugh when someone get's hurt?). I was thinking of a variation of George's sliders. I think I recall Todd had a plasma cutter?

You think correctly.

If you figure out your materials list I can get NI steel to make a delivery.

Ok, I like the sound of a plan coming together. My personal preferences would to make something similar to a Slee step slider, although I will admit that I don't have much of a clue about materials (length, thickness, etc.). These will be going on my 80 series and will the plans to throw a 2.5in OME lift on in the future, I want to make sure the :princess: and other shorties can get in relatively easy. I use my 80 as a DD so it has to be family friendly.

So basically I'm thinking a standard basic slider with a single bent tube rail where I can get some flate plate and weld it on top thereby resembling a step. I have mudflaps F&R but I also have the stock running board flare ends I could incorporate into the mix. I also have a single aftermarket cat on it, but I had it roatated to maximize ground clearance so the slider frame mount on the passenger side most likely won't be a big fab issue. At least not anymore than the typical 80 series design for that area.

Any thoughts on this Todd? I'm sure we can discuss this a little next week over dinner with Ali and the rest of the guys, but if we can get the ball rolling then we can put in an order and then pick a weekend to get started. I'm not in a rush to have them by any date, so I don't mind taking the time to think it through and build what I want the first time.

Thanks
Rob

Andre was talking about the same thing for his LX. He was talking about using a 2x6 rec tube to better fit in the stock running board location.

Depends on how you wheel it, but I wouldn't get too attached to those mud flaps if you want to do anything even moderately hard. Backing up in a hole pushes them against the wheel and they get torn off.

If you used wide rec tube you wouldn't even need outriggers. It would just be a beefier version of the stock steps. Again it depends on what you want to do with it. If you want to push trees around with them, you'll need outriggers. If you want to crest steep hills then you don't.

I think .120 is probably overkill on thickness. My first ones on the 80 were .25. That was just silly. The ones on the 55 are .125 and that's pretty darn strong too.

I think the flat plate isn't really needed. maybe notching the tube and welding diamond plate right in the tube would be cool. The tube gets slippery when it's wet, but it makes a fine step. Skate board tape works well for that too.

All right, now we're getting somewhere. I'm not too worried about the mud flaps and such and once I get the sliders on I have no problem trimming and/or just cutting them. The 2x6 tube sounds like a pretty good idea. I imagine it will weigh about as much as a smaller tube with an outrigger and a flat piece of sheet metal (the step) on top. So that sounds like a pretty decent idea.

I like the idea of the skateboard tape on the slider, but I'll see if I can visualize the diamond plate on top.

Lastly, I'm not sure who Andre is. I'm guessing its kenton? But, I'd be willing to work with both of you so we can build two sets of identical or near identical sliders. Definitely interested in reducing costs by buying the metal together.

80 sliders build

Scott, I think we're pretty much on the same page as far as slider goals. My 80 carries my family and is my daily driver (so I need steps), but I'll be doing some (mild/moderate) wheeling, so I want a semi-small step that loses very little clearance, is light, can support the vehicle weight, and sticks out far enough to push away tree stumps etc. Maybe a tall order, I know! :) I also want to bolt to my frame, not weld.
I sketched what I think Gumby's thinking of with the diamond plate in the attached drawing. Let me know if that's right. There would be two on each side, for front and rear passenger, I suppose/propose?
I priced out 6x2 ERW tube from Metal Supermarket, a 20' piece is about $180. They are in Elk Grove. Gumby do you have better pricing?

This is one serious thread hijack :D

I'm having NI steel put together a quote on

6x2x.120 rec tube - 6.95/ft
4x2x.120 rec tube - 4.90 /ft
1.5x.120 round tube - 5.95/ft
6x.120 flat - 2.70/ft
6x.250 flat - 3.90/ft

Anything else we need quantity of?

Right now I was just thinking 40-60' of the rec tube, 100' of round (I have a couple of cages to make) and 20-40 feet of flat.

I should probably get an idea of how many sets were making here. :D

If I'm thinking right we're looking at three sets of the 2x6 design, w/o tubes right?

I want to say the sliders will each take close to 16' of rec tube + whatever you make the frame outriggers from. I have 1.5x.25 round here or we can make them out of rec tube, or we can piece them together from flat stock.

I'm leaning more towards kenton's idea. Although I don't really NEED the diamond plate or cut-outs for it. I could be happy with a grit paint or like you said earlier, skateboard tape. Basic idea of a 2 x 6 rec slider sounds good to me. We can always add on some tube down the road. I guess we can draw them out on napkins tomorrow night. ;)
