I think just cutting off 1/4" of the drift will fix it up. They are cheap anyway.

Like usual, the experience of knowing you can just hammer away on a race and not worry about damaging it is useful. It's the paranoia that takes the time. Still I like the idea of using an old race with a cut out.

I'm just worried about how hard that is to cut with a hacksaw, man that steel is hard.

Cutting a race with a hacksaw with any type of standard blade I would say is next to impossible. You could use some sort of abrasive grinding wheel like on a Dremel etc. and that would do it. Also, I think it is unfair to say that one can just pound the crap out of a race without damaging it. I have seen them mostly crack, and sometimes chip trying to install them. A mar on the surface will affect the roller bearings that have to go around a zillion times. Stand an old race up on it's side and hit it with a hammer (after taking every safety precaution you know of) and watch the pieces fly. It shatters like glass and the pieces fly like bullets. Using an old race with a piece cut out will work as long as this is kept carefully in mind.
