Good day guys. I am currently in Africa, and will be here for a couple of months. I wanted to know if any of you had tried or know of anyone that has tried installing this Original Tire Carrier with the license plate holder into a U.S. Specs TLC FZJ80.

I own one back in the U.S. and would like to get this. The job would be done most likely by a body shop.

Thanks.

itll be more trouble than its worth. those carriers are mounted to the body, which have reinforcements behind the D pillar and the rear quarters to hold up against the weight of the unit.

you're better off building one off the bumper, or getting a bumper with one on it already.

The license plate holder is relatively easy; just drill some holes and install. As mentioned above, the tyre carrier requires reinforcing the body. It is unlikely the original was designed for heavy and oversized tyres so keep that in mind when you are having the work done. Extra reinforcement might be a good idea if you're going to run 35's or 37's. You should be OK with 33's or stock tyres.

The thing is that I need to know in detail since they will get these parts for me, and I have to tell this person detail by detail. As you know on this side of the world is not like back home, where if the part does not fit you can return it.

I understand that these bumpers are expensive, I probabally wouldn't be able to afford one either. Luckily, it was on mine already when I bought it last year.

A guy by the name of Girafe from CO on here was selling just what you are looking for though. It was just a month ago. Check the "For Sale" and "JDM for sale" postings.

If you search my recent postings, the thread should come up.

hello,
does anyone know where I can find one of this ? thank you
Land Cruiser Heaven based in Maryland brought several over from UAE. They are posted on their website. The kit includes the both the lift gate and the tailgate. It does not however include the brackets that are inside the D pillar.

I wonder why they would bother with the entire real tailgate - wouldn't it be easier to detach the latch from the tailgate?

Keep an eye out for someone parting out a Jap spec 80. They seem to be more common on that model. My HDJ81 has one, holds a 35" without issues and i've seen several 81's around with that same carrier.
The tailgate has a formed plate for the catch/striker to hold the carrier in place. The hatch has a rubber stopper.

I managed to find and bring one from South America. Now the installation saga begins....Will attempt to make my own reinforcements out of whatever gauge I can work with and find appropriate. I am not a body expert nor have too many tools for this. But I enjoy challenges. If anybody has gone this path please get in touch. :)

Here is some help
