Here are some pics for those interested in doing this to their 80. At the time that I did this project, a few months ago, I could not find any posts with pictures.

So here it is.

License plate holder sourced in the US from a fellow Mudder. I later found out that Mot has a bunch of these that he needs to get rid of. So PM him if you want one.

Make a template for drilling your holes in the tail gate & transfer it to your tailgate.

(Edit - Disregard the first picture. That was accidentally put in there and I can't delete it.)

Check and double check your measurements before you drill. The squared hole accomodates the back of the nutsert put into the holder to mount the license plate. The big hole is for the wiring plug. Use a file to smooth the holes, prep and paint.

Plug wiring into stock wiring plug for plate lights and affix to tailgate using the supplied nuts for the top two holes. The other three holes drill use snap in fasteners. Use some sealant around the holes and you are finished.

No problem guys.

Glad to give you the plug Mot.

Just another bit of info... the license plate itself WILL come in contact with the Slee rear bumper latch plate (on top of the rear bumper) when the tailgate is completely open. (see 1st pic in post #6). I have not figured out a sure fix this yet. The only thing I can think of is to remove the plate and shave/grind down the bottom of the plate by a milimeter or two and reinstall. To be honest though, I am ok with it for now.

This is a great mod and doesn't take too much time. I like the fact that I can change my spare without having to remove the license plate and lights that I formerly had mounted to my spare.

I still need to remove the big US Toyo LC emblem on the lift hatch. I feel it is a bit redundant & hope it is only held on with adhesive, like some of the badges.

Nice work, don't be it just hard adhesive right in the back of the Toyo LC emblem on the lift hatch.

I use heat gun to soften bit around it, some 3M adhesive remover and dental floss to get in between,.not to scratch paint.

Good luck.

Thanks for the awesome writeup! I'm thinking of getting the Iron Pig bumper, which I do not believe offers a solution for the plate issue. I guess I'll order it with tire swing out on the PS then!

Sucks for us IPOR users cuz its on the wrong side :flipoff2:

Although adding it to the tire itself may be the way to go.

SCFZJ80,
Can you tell me what your clearance was between the latch and tailgate. My Kaymar's minimum distance is about 5/8" (0.625 inch = 15.875 millimeter). Before I invest in 1 of mot's relocation holders, I'd like to know if it'll clear the bumper. From the pics I can tell the thicker upper part will be outside the bumper, but it's the lower thinner part that I'm concerned with. Maybe the thickness of rubber gasket and plastic holder would help. Thanks in advance for any light you could shed in this area!

*Off topic* Is that a jet engine fan blade? Looks like your missing some rivets on the intake panel which may cause FOD

80t0ylc - My Cruiser is in the shop getting a new head right now but that's another story but I can get some measurements when I get it back on Fri. or Sat. though.

4x4CPOSEADOG - Yeah that's a jet inlet with some missing rivets heads. They probablly were sucked through the bypass on that one! Some how that work pic got into my LC folder and I inadvertently posted it up.

I believe that Mr. Toy may have placed the spare on the right side so that the tire would not swing out into traffic. I am not sure how this would apply to RHD trucks though. I have a tailgate with the plate relocator on it. I can certainly make a direct template of the mounting holes if need be. Hell I may even cut the rear corner out so that the OEM swing out can be had. Not sure that our US spec trucks have the dash light for the "open swingout" though. Not that it really matters.

I'm wondering if it could be trimmed to fit a flat surface, say my Kaymar jerry can swing out?
