I took off the skid plate and was wondering if it is worth keeping. I realize the importance of keeping the truck light, but the factory plate doesn't look like it would do any more than to keep brush away. Anybody beefed one up with good results or should I just use it for a template and make one heavier gauge?

You mentioned in previous post you wanted to wheel rig. I went beefy. And have been very glad I did as I've had whole weight of vehicle come down in that skid plate. I bought a used Sky one off craigslist.

Are you talking about the skid that is protecting the front of the rig? I tossed that thing out the 1st time I started working on that truck. Never had an issue

Yes, that is the one I'm talking about. Did you replace yours with a beefier one or you run off-road without one?
My first thought was to add some flat plate to the thing, but after thinking about it more, I'm inclined to run without one and concentrate on the pumpkin first.

I've been running mine without one. And I do off roading. Mostly mud and snow but I worry more about the axle then hitting an oil pan. But if it's being used for serious off roading protect everything.

Sorry guys I misunderstood which skid was being talked about. I was thinking t-case skid. I don't have an engine skid, did beefy up dif face. Have been toying with idea of a light skid under engine just to keep some of the muck out.
Sorry about confusion.

I don't run an engine skid. The factory skid hit the recycler after I did the cross-over steering.

My xfer 'skid plate' was about the size of an envelope. Kind of makes a 'ting' sound when the weeds hit it. Useless scrap.

I had like 5 sitting around for the longest time, but they have all disappeared now that I want to put one back one.

Even if you beefed up the skid plate, the thin mounting tabs would break.
