John,
Going to run r134a. Its way to cheap compared to r12 these days. I drained and flushed everything, and have a new reciever dryer to use, plus all barrier wall o-ring hoses. If you are going to convert, you will have to make new hoses, since the old r12 hoses arent barrier wall and wont hold r-134a for long.
Too convert you need to get new hoses made, change compressor oil to PAG or Ester, and get a new reciever dryer. Lots of good reading online if you search "converting to r134a" on google. Do not just use those crappy kits at autozone. You need to evacuate the system, vacuum it down, ensure it holds a vacuum, and then charge with r134a. Best to take it to a shop, but do the cleaning/flushing work yourself.
Lou,
firewall grommets are discontinued, so I have raided all the ones I can find that are the same size from older toyota cars when I go to the junkyard. Not too many have the correct sizes, but from time to time I find ones that fit.

Brett what were the original hole sizes? I wonder if these would work?

Grommet Single #6 - #10

I will get pics later tonight. Here's what I have on my 73 FJ55:

OEM evaporator/controls with upgraded expansion valve.
Sanden 508 compressor on early OEM motormount/compressor mount(factory a/c only so read: RARE), with custom bracket I made-Go for FJ60 parts if you dont have this motor mount bracket.
Cheap napa reciever dryer
Acsource.com? condensor
Barrier wall hoses with o-rings, except where they connect to the evap...

Marshall, those look like they would work. one hole is definetly bigger than 1.25" IIRC, but could easily work for sure. you wont have hose exiting there, it will be copper tube, one 3/8", and one 5/8" IIRC... but those are nice looking grommets, and will be what I use...

Lou, as for the compressor, there are a few companies making brackets to mount sanden compressors onto the F/2F...

Or you could go the all factory route and find FJ60 parts, which is what I would do. only catch is the need to swap balancers.

Balancers? New term. What is it?

my ignorance

Brett; a bit confused about balancers..:o do you have any sources on the adaptors for the Sanden on an F or 2F motor
TIA.
Marshall; will be using those grommets, they look sweet:D

You know I really think I'll make my own lines. Looking at Nostalgic Air's web site you can get the whole line kit cheap and make them the way you want. The kicker is the crimper needed to make bubble crimps. I wish there was an economical tool for that. $150 is to much for or two A/C jobs. I wonder if any autoparts stores rent them?

I make my own lines too. Buy the right fittings, nuts and crimp ferrules. Cut hose to correct length insert fitting and ferrule... repeat.

then I take them to the local A/C shop and they crimp for cheap...

This way each hose fits without too much slack, the hose routing accomdates the natural curve of the hose etc.

Lou, I bet the evap core from the RH drive aussie trucks is same... or at least workable.

evaporator measurements

Brett, Marshall; here are a few pix of my evaporator with others to follow on the inner workings........:hhmm: 5x6x16 more or less.......sure would be nice to find a source for new ones......HTH

mastercool flaring tool

Brett, did you use your mastercool flare kit to make the AC hard lines?

No, all the connections are hoses. Since I was updating components, particularly the condensor and the compressor, I went with o-ring fittings on hoses.

I imagine you could get the mastercool flaring tool and put the o-ring flare on an aluminum or copper hardline, but I opted for hoses.

Ultimately you'd still end up with two hoses, and two hardlines...

Lou, I sent a few e-mails out about this specific evap. I don't think we will find the OEM unit but I'm betting we can find a suitable replacement. Might even be able to find one that performs a lot better.

In the mean time I'd look for a local A/C place that would test and repair your old core.

Also while you have them out. Measure the inside and the mounting outside diameter of those grommets.

Marshal, Brett, thanks for the follow-up;
Marshall; do you want me to measure the old grommet or the new ones am going to order?.....can't measure any old one as it was gone when I got the pig;

Lou are those not the grommets on the outlets to your evaporator?
