AC fire wall grommet measurements

Marshall, Brett; here are the grommet measurements
3/8=10mm ID x 1 1/4=32mm OD
5/8=16mm ID x 1 9/16=40 mm OD
they are pretty dried out though:frown:

test your stuff yourself!!

...continuing this thread......was told by the Birmingham reps for "Vintage Air" that my evaporator was bad but they could give me a good deal and install a Vintage Air unit for a price of ONLY 2600$:frown:
:hmm: took Brett's and Marshall's advice and rigged up a little pressure tester, was not able to find a way to install the schraeder valve....spent several hours at Lowe's and HD without finding all the items needed to set it up:frown:
So, I capped one end off and jammed an airline in the other end got the pressure up to nearly 150 psi and could not get the evaporator to bubble when submerged:confused:..........thinking I was screwing up some way or other decided to take it to a radiator shop........."Norris Radiators" and they told me that after pressurizing both the evaporator and the condenser to 175 psi there was no leakage:hmm:..........
question I have; would you pursue the "leakage over time" test or just go with Norris Radiator and my results? TIA

Lou

quote=n2666s;3768123]Brett;..... a bit disheartened today ..........here is the deal; got my stuff back from Birmingham.....their quote was ONLY:eek: 2600 $ for Vintage Air install using the underhood stuff from my 74.....was told that there was a leak in the evaporator but they did not or could not tell me if it had been tested with the expansion valve off?!:frown: am a bit at loss on your suggestion for a pump set up to test it.........can follow directions but have difficulty visualizing the set up without pix:frown:.......did take a printout of your recommend for a test set up and got some very blank stares at the local AC place :hmm: Questions;
#1.. is there another evaporator that might fit?
#2..how did you install the Sanden compressor?
#3..can you please post pix of your set up?
TIA

I would attempt using the ND evaporator... When reinstalling the copper hard lines and the new expansion valve, be sure to get the flare fittings tight. the only leaks I have had on mine were at the flare fittings. I will warn you ahead of time, getting a used flare fitting to seal takes a lot of effort. might have to tighten the crap out of it, or at least seat and re-seat the fitting a few times. leak test with a little pressure and some soapy water on the outside of the fitting...

expansion Valve TXV from Kragen

Brett; priced the expansion valve part # 4608 here locally at O'Reileys/Kragen and it was 53.99 with out taxes....:hmm:notice your price was a lot lower..........did they give you a discount? or is this number correct?......seems like an awfull steep jump in price in a few months:frown:.......another question; did you replace the styrofoam inside the evaporator housing?......mine is total crap:frown: TIA

Lou

Now,you will notice the shield doesnt fit anymore, so trim like this:

Then its time to do a leak test. I bought a 5/8"(IIRC) flare cap and capped the large outlet. With a rubber nipple on the blow gun, I applied air pressure to the new tube and sprayed a mixture of soapy water from an old simple green spray bottle. Any leaks will show up by making bubbles. Tighten down the fittings and then its time to recover all the copper with the prestite tape. Leave room for the firewall grommets and re-install(or install for the first time) your re-fitted evaporator....

good luck.

TXV valve from Kragen/O'Reilly's

imitation is the highest form of flattery;)

:hmm:wondering what to do about the cracked styrofoam liners but did continue to clean up the parts before putting things together!
Talked with the local peeps at Kragen/O'reilley and they can order this valve; it seems different in appearence on the "probe" side from the one Brett installed and in my ignorance of AC units wanted to get an opinion if it might work....specially with the fact that it will be a special order that must be payed for before ordering:frown: TIA.......

O'reilly bought kragen etc, and they arent listing the the factory aire line anymore. might try instore? I have purchase a few different brands, and had various pictures, but all showed up exactly as the one I installed. I think Parker makes them for all the companies, as the parker "P" is on all the ones I have purchased.
