Odd Ball Tire Rack

I have this spare tire rack on the shelf and I have never seen one with a support rod to keep it in an open position. Looks very factory, has a clip to retain it when not using and a spring loaded pivot at the base. Can't find it in my early parts books, photo next to common early rack. Does anyone have one? Thanks, John

tailgate would keep the tire carrier open...i would think it would be cool with barn doors.
what's the clearance of the rod with anything open though?

I'm thinking it was from a 40 with barn doors as there are no notches for the tailgate hinge and latch of a drop down tailgate.

Do you have a picture of the other side? Might date how old it is. Personally think Toyota would have used a clamp style clip like with the jack, jack handles, starting handle and passenger's seat until the 68 model.

Nothing in the FJ25 or FJ45 parts books. Here is the only reference to the tire carrier I have (1961 to 1962 FJ40 parts book)

(N) is an FJ25 Reflector Assembly.... maybe they did have one in the middle of the spare...

Here is a photo of the outside, couple studs missing from the carrier, a 40 rack because of thepadlock stud,and the spacer washers. Those round head Phillips screws are backed up with nuts and lock washers and do not attach anything. Another mistory. John

very interesting to find this stuff 50+ years after these were made.

Just checked 4 other early racks and no hole for the support bar. So unless someone else has a rack with this prop rod, I think we can concur that this was home made. Thanks for the help, John

That looks like tire holder for my 68. Has the stud for the lock which is newer then the FJ25. Same with ones from 61 & 62 FJ40s, no stud. The screws for the reflector are for the narrower reflector with studs on the back instead of a flange.
