For those of you who are interested and may not go back and read the first post, you should. I have been editing the first post. I just added the maps for the trails and the way into and out of the campsite.
Wife-unit is in, as is Millie The Camping Dog! Smokeymountains.com shows that weekend as peak of fall colors, so should be great photos to come from this run. Looking forward to it,
We may bring our Border Collies. Only the 2nd attempt at camping with them, first with the RTT and trailer. We may get voted off the island.... Wife should still be in....
The area we used to camp last year can probably accommodate up to 20 vehicles. Lots of room. We had 10 rigs last year, and everyone was at least 50-75' away from the next rig. If it is available is another story…

I am debating about going up Thursday evening to grab the spot. If I don't go Thursday, I will be leaving very early Friday morning.
Fires are OK. No need to bring wood. We will be camping in the nation's largest Ponderosa pine forest... Plenty of fuel. Just bring a newspaper to light.
I do not have GPS coordinates, but the site we had last year was a numbered road to the south of FR 231, approx one mile from the southern terminus of FR 231 (Woody Mtn Rd, which ends at the East Pocket lookout).
(And that was Brice quoting me above, he can probably send you a pin/coordinates before you roll in. There is good cell service at the site.)
I have never bought firewood from a store or any one else. Last time we were up north my wife and I cut, hauled, split and stacked two cords of oak and juniper. For campfires pine/pitch pine works and easy to find. As far I know no permit is required for campfire wood. Just needs to be dead and down. I gave up my spot when I went on this run a few months ago and up coming surgery. Still hoping to making it over for camping. Find out this week if I'm okay to drive. For what ever reason doctor left instructions not to drive. Seeing reports the leaves are turning up north already. Know a spot just off the 300 road that has maples. Window for prime colors is small. Hoping this run won't be too late.
We may be out for camping due to a lack of camping equipment. I will know more next week. Still want to do the run though. I still want to camp too but there may be a major scheduling conflict. The conflict is bad for camping and good for other reasons.
What I am most upset about is not being able to do a #6 on the AZFJ group "nearby."

Unfortunately, we switched hours and I have to work until 4:30 on Friday. I could go down and snag it after work, but it sounds like it wouldn't be too long before the rest of the group got there.
