Guys,

This one has been listed 3 times now...guy is firm on his price (which doesn't seem that bad).

I have to go to Atlanta in a few weeks, thinking i might check it out. Any thoughts or questions i might need to ask before i call? I find it odd that he can't sell it for that price? Maybe because the paint is so bad?

saint...I'd check it out.

1. I believe I see a chevy bowtie....if so I'd ask if he did the conversion (guys here can chime in on this....but I'd be wary of a crummy swap) of course if it was done 15 years ago and has been a DD it may be ok.
2. no clue on milege...that doesn't matter if it's a trail truck but that an emissions not being tested are factors to consider
3. "rear interior door seal has moderate rust" what does his def. of rust mean....a dime sized hole or the entire rear sill will fall off in the next 3 miles...but not now?

for the price, if your in the area, it's worth a look in my opinion.
Dash pad, gauge cluster, steering wheel, etc. all look accurate for the year.

maybe it's a $5500 truck and he won't budge?

read through the links I put on the last page before you go for what to look for and ask.

good luck...report back!!

It may be worth a look, but just from the wording it doesn't seem like he would budge on the price.

The paint looks bad, but Shush has proven spray paint can fix that. The rust comment concerns me as does the questionable mileage. You could ask for compression numbers. The fact that he has had it for 15 years is probably good but also means he won't be eager to sell.

Do you want a weekend driver or a wheeler? Look at "pancho" if you want a wheeler, but I'm not sure if it is much of a driver. This one looks like an option for a fun weekend stock driver like mine, but I paid much less.

Thx for all the input. I talked to the guy earlier, should have more detailed pics tomorrow. Will post them up.

Not a terrible price if the top is rust free.

It all depends on what you want to do with it. Have learned that the hard way!!

Talked to the guy again. He says paint job is original factory paint, and a very, very bad attempt at a rattle can fix to faded areas.

He says engine is original 2FE, which appears to be correct based on the pics and my very limited knowledge.

He used it as a daily driver (20 mile commute) for a while.

All i see when i look at these pictures though...is rust.

I'm wanting to fix whatever i buy up to be a weekend play toy...very little wheeling.

Pics below.

Saint....I am NOT mechanical, can't do body work, really anything cruiser related and have had a blast just working on mine and learning. IF this is just a play around weekend truck don't worry with rust as much. I would do like Nolen said and focus on mechanical (that was a "Toy" emblem not bowtie..aha!) so you can cruise in it. As you have time you can remove one body part or another and do clean up....Ive spray painted my ENTIRE truck over the last year and learned alot about how it goes together and functions.

Having said that I paid alot less like Andy said. I would take the middle road of Andy and Nolen and say that's probably a $4-5k truck which is most likely why the guy still has it.

At the end of the day it's how bad you want it but I would walk away for more than $5000 unless it's mechanical perfect and the only rust is that rear sill.

DEFINITELY soliciting opinions, yes.

I'm thinking I might offer $4500 or $5000, wait for him to say no, then move on...

Never thought it would be this hard to willingly find a way to spend 5 grand.

I have an idea.....give me $3k and you can come drive your $3k of parts around on my truck whenever you want!

then you still have $2k for other hobbies!

Ha! Nice.

OR, i could let my wife merely look at the $5000 and it would disappear in a matter of seconds!

Back to the search...

I went through the $5000 FJ-40 search with my buddy Todd about a year ago. Finding a $5000 non-basket case is hard.

Now, if you have $7000-8000 you can get a really nice one.

If it were me, I would put that $5000 in a sock and add $3000 to that sock until I could get one in that range.
