Do these only work with your tops? How do they install in a 78 FJ40 that never had a softtop installed?

They work with any factory soft top. THey will work on 75 and newer cruisers but the doors are a tight fit at the top. I have a set on my 76 and they fit just fine.

Yes they should fit a 42 as well.
interested I've got a fj40 that's been stretched 24" so id need the sides that much longer.

That shouldn't be a problem. Most likely we can do what I do for 45 beds and flatten one end and send the tabs that you weld on and have you do the other end to your specific length.
