I was driving my FJ40 on the con and had a new failure for me. coming down the slabs, the engine backfired and stalled. Wouldn't restart.. Turns out the Dizzy had walked it's way out of the retention clamp enough to pull out of the oil pump and change timing enough to kill it (thankfully). While resetting the distributor, I found the rotor VERY hard to turn. Something inside of the dizzy between the case and shaft was seizing up. The dizzy in my 2F was from a Japanese Fire truck and has the Vacuum deleted, locked and sealed. I think what happened is the helical gears pushed the dizzy up when the shaft seized. I was able to rotate the shaft enough to free it up a bit, restab the dizzy and limp back to the trailhead. I like the purely mechanical units because it's a rockcrawler and I am not concerned too much about mileage (turbo 2F on propane).

So now I either need to get the Dizzy rebuilt (small case with bushings) or hopefully replace the dizzy with a good one that will use that vacuum block off parts. One problem is I do not have the exact part number for that dizzy. I think it is just the standard small case vac advance model (based on the block off plate) without the octane/altitude adjustment, but am not positive. The gear is still pinned to the shaft and fine.

Does anyone rebuild these distributors any more (or can the non ball bearing dizzys be rebuilt). If I absolutely just need a new one I'll call Kurt and get one ordered.

No I do not want a DUI.

I've got some spare dizzys & parts in Camino ( halfway between Pollock and Placerville). I bet my neighbor does too.
Thanks amigo, Cruiser is back home in Vegas. Even drives around the yard. But I'm sure that is a temporary thing till I get this Ironed out. I may hit you up for a spare if I do not just go new.

Interesting - turbo propane isn't something you see every day.

I just bought a chinanesium delco from Amoron a few months ago for $120. It replaced my old delco I have been running since 1982. Straight mechanical advance. I put on my old drive gear and the cap, points and condenser - all it and runs fine.

I run a direct read oil pressure gauge to prevent damage.

Jason, you can move the counterweights from that fire truck dizzy into ANY OE small cap dizzy. And when I say any, I mean ANY. That includes a vacuum retard dizzy, which are pretty much throw away free. I have one I can send you; just cover shipping.

BTW, don't text me on my cell about LC stuff; the cell is strictly for socializing.

@4Cruisers may can help....if Mark doesn't have what you need.

Thanks Mark. I may take you up on that. I think i might have one of the old adjustable dizzys around here somewhere. If the parts swap, I'll just use that :) and I wont ever text you about lc stuff on your cell ever again ;)

I have quite a few Toyota distributor shaft bushings harvested from new non-Land Cruiser distributors, and have rebuilt a couple of small cap distributors using these. I've found that in some cases the shaft itself is worn at the bushing, and have used a good shaft harvested from another Land Cruiser distributor as a replacement. Let me know if you're interested in a rebuild - I've got boxes and boxes of new and like-new distributor parts.

Are you still running the brake booster I sold you 25 years ago? Curious as to how it held up (or didn't).

BTW, the photo to the left was taken at my house near Buffalo and Alexander a little more than 20 years ago, before I moved back to New Mexico. Many people don't believe it snows in Las Vegas.

Lemme pull the dizzy and take a gander. Might have you rebuild it as a spare. :) thank you!

Different booster now. I was fighting brake problems till I swapped to a mini booster and a chevy 1 ton master. Stupid brakes now...
