Yea I know it says that but check plates. They are cali plates on the rigs and all are in the same shop here in the states. I'm sure he didn't have cali plates when he lived in Australia or Africa or wherever he imported them from

We must find out their secrets and share them with the IH8MUD community (I'm sincerely serious about this). I'm curious if they are stateside and if they are actually being driven legally? Also, I know this thread is crazy long now, but I have a feeling that it's asking to be killed like the half chicken/human hybrid from the South Park episode making fun of PETA.

He might be doing temporary 1 year importation.

Not sure, I just know that it is probably one of the easiest ways to get a nonconforming vehicle registered in the States.

Anyone can do the 1 year importation but after that it cannot be sold on and must be exported to another country. Since he runs a shop I'm guessing that he has contacts around the world and is likely a temporary custodian. One thing is for sure -- no way in s*** is he going to come on the forum to discuss the hows and whys of having the trucks here because they are in no way shape or form legal in the US.

I'm surprised no one has tried putting the front end of the 2016 7X series on a LEGAL 25+year old 7X series. Just remove the old fenders, hood, grill, etc. and install the new. Body parts should be totally legal to get and not much has changed on these since 1991 anyways. The body lines on the new doors look exactly the same as the old ones.

If I had the money, I'd buy this:
For Sale: - 1990 BJ75 LHD PU cable lockers

Put a 2016 front end on it, paint it, lift it, etc. - and you basically have this (minus the rear doors):

For what purpose would someone do that? I tried emailing him and texting but No reply

I don't think he responds to anyone from what I have heard from others.

I am sure there are ways to import less than 25 year old trucks but few people have the means to do so for more than a year and/or sell them later on. I know there are some funny exemptions for "farm" vehicles but it must be plated as such and used for that purpose majority of the time.

I grew up on a farm as a kid and was given an old chevy truck for college that had farm truck plates on it. One day a Texas state trooper gave me major hassle over driving it all the time in the city and never on the farm (I guess he saw me driving around more than once). I explained to him I was currently going to college and was driving what I was given but still got an issued warning from him. My dad told me to just throw in a bale of hay and leave it. He always knew how to solve an issue. RIP dad.

Probably because I dont think anyone would go through that trouble just to make it "look" like a newer model. The appeal of the newer models isnt the look of the headlights / grill, its the features like engine and 4 doors. 70 series Cruiser people arent in it for the apperance, they are in it for the functionality (the looks are a nice bonus though ;) ).
Also, someone should absolutely buy that pickup and get Joe to put the 1hz/h55 in it instead of doing a front end conversion like you mentioned..... now thats a awesome truck to be had!

You shouldn't be surprised. The older ones (i.e. Legal to import) have plenty of appeal in their own right. I personally like the "boxy look" better than the new "softer look". I suspect the older 70 Series are just as capable as the new ones and can be had tomorrow. Not having to look over your shoulder wondering if some government agency is going to crush it is a real plus
also.

I'm totally with you. I just don't understand wanting to spend $90k for the new engine and transmission. Other than that, these trucks haven't really changed much. The older engine's are extremely capable and there are tons of options for engine/tranny swaps if that's what you're after.

And I should clarify - if I had the money, I would buy the 1990 BJ75. I would not put a 2016 front end on it. But someone could do all of those things instead of paying $90k for a slightly different look. I guess the extra interior room is what everyone is after? Or maybe it's so you can have something that no one else does? Still doesn't seem worth it to me...

I'm happy with my FJ60 :steer:.

The lack of legroom and the smell of high quality Naugahyde will grow on you after a while. : )

So I've now assumed a group buy is out of reach?

It would potentially be more effective to simply move the group to Africa.

Alternatively, I wonder... these laws restricting vehicle imports - exactly which laws are they? Our incoming administration talks a lot about 'ending regulations'. Anyone a lawyer? What would it take to get an import restriction exception that would cover vehicles including the quad cab 79 Land Cruiser? I.e. we don't like the way the law & regulations work, so let's change the law & regulations using proper channels.

Is the quad cab 79 Land Cruiser currently available for purchase in Mexico? Central America? Canada? Where is the nearest place Toyota actually sells Unicorns?

not in Mexico, in canada(and US) for mine use, yes on South America.

I feel like starting a church and becoming a NGO might be our collective best bet ;) the Church of the Unicorn............
