Saturday night we rolled into camp late after a long day towing and winching a truck incapable of any form of self power over a trail that is, in my opinion, harder than Rubicon. By the time we found a camp site and set up it was getting dark and I hadn't even started dinner.

Enter my cheap Chinese pocket stove, my MSR tea kettle, a can of Spam and Nong Shim noodle bowl.

Target : Expect More. Pay Less.

I cracked a raw egg into the bowl after adding the hot water. Within 15 minutes I was noshing on a pretty tasty meal with almost no effort. After dinner there was ZERO clean up. Was it the best camp meal I ever had? Maybe not but it sure seemed like it at the time.

These pre packaged bowls are, IMHO, a worth while addition to any trips stores. You never know when things will go pear shaped and all you want is something hot in your belly before you hit the rack. The trick is to dress them up a bit, I like spam and a poached egg.

What would you add?

the MSR tea kettle- I've been using mine >twice daily at home and on every trip for the last almost 5 years...the thing is almost 20 years old.

My favorite is the Nongshim Neoguri Udon noodles. I think the regular packaged ones are worth the extra mess/effort. As for add-ons, for sure 1-2 eggs stirred up, thin slices of beef (i.e. shabu shabu) or Spam, chinese broccoli or baby boy choy, mushroom and maybe some kimchi make for an excellent quick dish. Oh, and Japanese or Korean beer. Ramen/noodles and beer go well together for some reason.

Great stuff, except for the massive salt load. Wish they'd make a widely available low sodium option.

I'm simple and eat Ramen noodles when rolling up to a campspot late at night. The egg concept has me intrigued and a good source of protein. Please explain the egg addition process to this newbie!

i have just cracked an egg into the cup noodles and then added boiling water.

the boiling water will cook the egg.

Well hells bells, even I can handle that! Thank you.

On the egg thing, crack them into a Nalgene bottle or a juice bottle so you don't have to store them in the shell on the trail. You can still pour them out individually if you're careful, or you can shake the hell out of them for scrambled eggs. There are even small Nalgene containers if you only need a couple eggs.

that's what i do. I've got spare mason jars that I use for this.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of not all the salt is in the small flava packet.... that comes inside the bowl...
I usually put s third of that into the ramen for taste....
I addition to that egg throw in some cholula,or a half cut jalapeño, and hhhmmm, hhhmmm, hhhmmm.....
Great thread...!!

I even throw in deli meats sometimes or other veggies but that's usually only when I cook it on a stove in a pot

Dang, you can do that? Wow, had no idea!

Yes. I agree, I also only use a small amount of the packet as well. Since I'm on a salt restricted regime, I'm very sensitive to salt taste, so I notice salt (usually too much) in lots of foods. But at least with the packet, you can control it.

Oh snap, that's a fine idea. I tried the egg thing last week and it was tasty. Flank steak is next.
