No power, sounds like a lawn mower (22R-E)

Dan,
Any update on the problem with your daughter's truck?

My daughter has an 86 with 22re and she is describing to me similar symptoms with her truck. Starts and runs very rough when cold or during wet weather. The engine seems to barely have enough power to get the truck rolling. Once it warms up, it is much better - might not be 100% but much better. The problem started a couple weeks ago but it is intermittent. Does not always happen, but when it does, the truck is cold, or weather is wet.

That sounds ignition related, I'd pull the dist cap and see if you have some moisture in there.

The truck is 300 miles away so right now I can only do some remote troubleshooting.

The truck has been well maintained. I adjusted the valves last September when I had the truck here. I also installed a new clutch, surfaced flywheel, pilot bearing, throwout, etc. - clutch was slipping.

I've changed the spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and air filter not too long ago. The water pump was leaking through the weep hole so I put a new pump on it a couple months ago when she was in town.

Nothing stinks as far as I know but I'll double check. I'll also ask her to watch for any persistent exhaust smoke.

This engine has about 200k on it. I've told her to check the water often. I believe its using a little. Might be leaking but she says no puddles under the truck so its more likely burning it. Oil looks good - not cloudy or brown.

300 miles away beats me. Kate's got the truck about 1000 miles away from me! ;)

No real change, it consistently gets better, but still does the "lawnmower" impression when it's chilly/wet.

But, yesterday Kate sent me a recording of it at idle. Sounded like crap--like a missing vacuum line or something. I think I need to either get out there to check it myself soon. Troubleshooting by phone is hard, especially when I play with diesels, so my constant suggested fix is to replace the motor entirely probably doesn't help. ;)

I will note that her mileage has gone WAY down with this problem. Like 11-12MPG. I'll have her pull the distributor to check for moisture, but I'm tempted to replace the O2 sensor just to see if it gets better.

Hey Dan, I ended up making the drive to have a look at ours and the problem looks like a blown head gasket or cracked head. Its blowing steam out the tailpipe and pressurizing the cooling system. I'm pretty sure it runs rough at startup because as it sits, water is collecting in one or more cylinders.

I trailered it back home and should have time to start taking it apart within the next couple weeks so I should find out more then. My daughter is now driving another car - '88 Land Cruiser.

I know this probabaly doesn't help you, just thought I'd let folks know what was up with this 22RE "running rough at startup".

Eeeek!

I'll make sure to have her check for obvious HG issues...

Hey Dan,

Were you able to determine what was wrong with her truck? My truck is doing the same thing! Replaced spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor, ignitor assembly, coil, o2 sensor, a couple vacuum lines... Now my fuel pump is out so thats getting repalced next... My cat was also glowing red. Hollowe it out because we thought it may be clogged. Timing is good, timing chain & guides are good. Not sure what else to check... :(

I know this thread is old, but figured its worth a shot to ask.

Thank You!

I replaced the Timing Chain and guides pretty recently (Maybe 5,000 miles ago).

I'll have to make a special trip to do any real checking of it myself, but Kate is pretty handy (hey, she replaced the fuel filter on it in an airport parking lot once). But she doesn't have a timing light, although we may have to go borrow one or something.

I can't even bring one over. No use for the things. Stupid gas engines. :flipoff2:

Hilux: oh, I've looked all over for the D-port. I've even checked for other year ports in case somebody hacked a different year harness into that truck. It simply appears to have been removed. Why you would remove one, I have no idea.

Heck, I spent a few extra days when I wired the faux-lux to make sure my OBD port worked...

Thank you for the response. We ended up chasing my problem down to the fuel pump. My engine was not getting eneough fuel which caused it to run lean & sputter & caused the cat to glow red. We didnt know the fuel pump was on its way out until it stopped working completly. On the bright side with everything else I replaced, she got a nice little tune up this weekend!

It did get fixed, but I no longer remember what did it.

I think it might have been when I cleaned the MAF, and the EGR system real well.
