The OP asked if there was a comprable or better option than an currently unavailable AT tire for a trip to Baja. He wanted something that is good in mud and snow. He also wanted something with better sidewall protection for the fauna of Baja.
The MTR with Kevlar is mix of AT and MT treads, hence the hybrid comment. A hybrid of the two, nothing more. It is good all around tire in the sand, mud, and snow while also performing well on the highway.
The statement that it’s not your tire of choice is your opinion but my experience is that it performs well in the snow and provides plenty of traction. Ice is another story for any tire.
It’s a tire that fit the OPs requirements and provided another option that he solicited. Heck, I bought the tires for the same reasons, to run between Baja and the mountains.
I actually live in the rocky mtns where we have snow packed roads for months on in , just like the op stated he skis on the weekend, this would mean driving hard pack roads. In powder snow sure mtr is fine. Hard pack not so much. Why do you think a mtr is a hybrid tire? It is Goodyear’s most aggressive tire designed for rock and mud. I have run mtr 1 and mtr 2s since they have been out on my trail truck. For daily I run a duratrac which is a great tire for snow pack. It doesn’t really matter since he got bfg all terrains, which is like a duratrac not mtr

To each his own. Plenty of posts on Portal, Pirate and Mud about it to educate with. Tire preferences are like peoples choices in women, beer, cars, etc.. everyone has a choice and there is always someone telling others why theirs is better or worse. Stay safe in the snow.

Yeah I was just wondering f if I should open my mind a bit and try something new

Hey Man - IMHO BFG KO2’s would be my last choice for wheeling Baja. Recommend Toyo MT / M55 or Nitto MT / RG based on experience with each, including KO2’s.

Also recommend a narrower profile for winter in the Sierras. 35’s are sketchy in hardpack no matter what tread. The difference in handling between profiles is night and day.

Good luck

Boggers would be the obvious alternative, duh:moon:

Nice score on the like-new KO2s, thats a win-win!
