I have an opportunity to purchase a 1983 FJ60 with original 147K. The truck has been used as a farm truck for many years and stored indoors. It is owned by a Toyota mechanic who has put a new clutch, new suspension parts, tires and brakes. Mechanically, it is VERY SOLID. No rust on the frame, and the interior is all there with no rips or tears. Headliner is clean, carpet is dirty.
Now for the bad. The lower tailgate is rusted, there is some rust on the rockers and the rear quarters. The doors are solid.
The seller is asking $2000. I am guessing I will be adding another $2500 in parts and whatever it would cost someone to paint it.

What is the approximate value of such a truck knowing that is mechanically strong and it will have new paint and no rust by the time I am done with it?

Any help or insight is appreciated.

Even for a rusty body, you're going to be hard pressed to find any FJ60 that's mechanically sound with a solid frame for that cheap. I see you're in the rust belt... that will also add to the difficulty to finding a good clean truck. That being said, you're probably looking at well over $2500 to repair the body work and paint. I'm sure someone else on here can chime in on what you'd be looking at as far as cost of body work goes.

What's your over all budget?

"Some" rust, usually means a lot of hidden rust. Better check that frame real well.

It's hard to put an overall value on the cruiser without pics and a thourough inspection. It could be a gem or it could be a part out rig. Sorry to be blunt.

The mileage is good, the rust is bad. Most guys will take a rust free desert cruiser with 300k miles on the clock, over a rusty cruiser with 100k miles on the motor.

Best thing to do is check the classifieds here on the forum. That will give you an idea of the market price of various Cruisers. eBay and other outlets tend to be inflated, but I've seen Cruisers sell for a premium there.

In my opinion, the market for these Cruisers is so thin, that prices are all over the board. There's not enough volume to stabilize true values. Sellers can get lucky and fetch $27,000 for their rigs, and some will sit for months at $10k.

If you're a seller or a buyer, the key to a great deal is patience.

Agreed w/ landpimp. 2k is beautiful. Buy it and know for a fact your most likely going to have rust to deal with among other needs.

I am going to load the few pics I have. I wasn't able to get pics from the Pass side. The paint you see on it will come off with a power washer. The frame is very solid and it has many new parts. I am not sure if the wheels are OEM and I know the radio is not.
I am hoping that if I can spend no more than $10K on it, I will have a very nice truck that is worth close to $15K or more. Am I am dreaming?

That truck is either dusty or oddly primed? It's definetly a full on JOB rig.... as in it appears you'll be working day and night on it. Eh. 2k is a great price but nowadays your lucky to find a decent truck for 4K or so. Someone said your in the rust belt? Where? My ph isn't showing me your location.

It is not primer. It is some sort of camouflage paint that will peel off with a power washer. I am in Grand Rapids MI.

If your budget is 10k... you can definitely find a nicer example. Unless you're really wanting/looking for a project, Keep searching my friend.

Full floaters and aussie mirrors? Or center caps and the knockoff aussie mirrors. Intriguing...
Either way, looks like a lot of work.

Bummer. I gots the FFs on the brain. Seeing them everywhere...

I dunno now..........

You'll end up putting a bunch of bucks into this. Keep looking, spend your money upfront on a nicer truck.

I'd pass....
