New Years Ride

Adam and I are planning to be there. Adam bought a 40 the weekend after Thanksgiving. It ain't pretty, but locked front and back, caged, Saginaw ps, 2.5" OME, on 33s. Not bad for under $2k.

We are all a little worried about the water levels but weve done this many time before and know not to take any unnecessary risks. there is somewhat of a back-up plan if the water level doesnt drop enough to get in the bottom of the cove . under normal conditions a stock FJC would be fine. what size tires you running?
Will there be any considerations in the plan for changes in water levels while we're there (like last year)? That's probably a bigger concern for me than the water levels today.

Hi guys, weather looks good for weekend, but I am in the boat oa no snorkel either. Looks like hit and miss showers/rain all week, just wondered if we have a sense of water levels currently.

Glad you can finally make a ride

The water levels will not come up as long as it does not rain. Currently they are not predicting rain for the weekend. We will listen to radio while in cove to make sure that does not change.

Or better yet, we can all do this at each crossing to make it interesting, lol!

no use in obsessing about water levels...... now. Its not going to be an issue until the day of. I don't have a snorkel or diesel either, have to check the water level maybe a day prior, and that would have to be someone local. I'm sure someone local will chime in. Not everyone is sitting on large tires and high lifts...me included.

as normal...one of the guys who has large tires..etc will generally gauge the water level and cross first to see how deep it is, and depending on that...may dictate a different approach or progress forward. I've been there more than once when the normal start point was too deep, and we went in a different way...but we came out that way on Sunday.

I too get nervous about high water...the situation out in the cove can change quickly....so if it starts raining hard...it might be a good call to be on the right side of the river/creek unless you want to wait things out....of course the guys who know all this will be there on the ground with everyone else.

I have no dog in the fight but figured I'd post this up for informative purposes. I'm not 100% sure where the trail is and what creek/river is crossed, but the graph below shows the Sequatchie River near Whitwell which is a little north of Jasper - it doesn't look like water levels are forecast to fall much between now and the ride. Take this with a grain of salt if the trail is on a smaller river as it will recede faster.

Regardless, have fun and I'm looking forward to the stories/pics.

The website below includes a map browser which might help you find a closer location, if one exists.

Thanks for the info, never seen that site before. Is it possible to look back at levels in the past? If so, we could look back to last years ride & see where the readings were.

I tried to upload a couple of images of last years river conditions vs this years, but I keep getting an error message. Unfortunately and oddly, USGS didn't have river level data for the same gage last year but they did have river flow data. I'm not exactly sure when the ride took place, but the Sequatchie River at Whitwell peaked at about 4500 cubic ft per second (cfs) on 1/5/2015. Currently it is running at just under 7000 cfs and forecast to remain at about this level through at least 1/2/2016.

For inquiring minds, the webpage below allows you to pick particular river monitoring stations and customize by date range.

Here is the link to the Sequatchie River at Whitwell:

For interested non-TN folks, just search "USGS real time [state of interest]" and you should get what you need.
