Its a long bed for now I am going to cut the frame right behide the rear shackels. That will shorten the truck by about 10 inches.

No need for a class. Buy a MiG, an auto-darkening helmet, some metal and go to town! It's best to learn by doing!

Dan

Definitely. MIG is super easy. The only thing to learn is how to get a nice, even bead and that only comes with practice. Because the gas is inert, it's pretty idiot-proof as well. Of course, you'll need an angle grinder with some grinding and flap disks to hide the ugly stuff as well. :cheers:

I saw a really nice Mig in the MAC catalog it is computerized, they sell it for 2,800 is that too expensive for a beginner or do they last a life time. Also how are plasma cutters?

That's way too much $$$ for a home shop, I would get one of the referb Hobart units from Tool King, like this one;

Hobart Handler 500501 Factory Reconditioned "B Grade" 180 Mig Welder - ToolKing.com

Good units, a couple of buddies have them;

For a plasma I have heard good things about the Parker units;

Plasma Cutter, TIG, Plasma/TIG/Stick Combination Machines... Inverter!

Hobart and Miller both make light duty MIGs that will handle up to 1/4" for under a grand, retail. Either would be a good choice. For as simple as MIG welding is, the computerized units are probably overrated, but I've never used one (or felt the need :grinpimp:).

Plasma cutters are also good idiot-proof tools as well. They allow you to make cuts a lot cleaner and easier than with oxy-acy, but they're a lot more expensive, and can't handle much thickness. You'll pay over a grand for a good unit that can only handle 1/8".

I bought a Mig welder from HTP, the Mig 140 and have been very happy with it. I was only looking at the 110V models. They have other models that are rated higher than what I have. It has several standard features that were extra on the other units that I looked at. It can weld 1/4 inch thick material if it is beveled. Plus, their price was the best at the time that I was buying mine. Prices have come down some since I bought one. So shop around.

I still want a plasma cutter and it will most likely be my next big shop tool purchase.
