Hi Folks,

l've recently bought a 1984 HJ47 with 221k on the clock which l want to upgrade. l'm in the process of buying an EZ electronic power steering kit (CityRacersLLC supplied) for it and was looking to replace the 16' split rims with ordinary steels (preferably) to have A/T tyres fitted for everyday use. Can you give me any info on which rims will fit the truck ?

Thanks

Ken

I thought they had rims too. Somewhere up in the list of vendors someone had steel 16" rims for way more than I could afford to spend, so I'm just sticking with my 15" ones.

The 'H' in the title might be scaring people off... there aren't many of us diesel people in here.
Regardless, the wheels are the same between FJ / HJ, so really depends on what style you're looking for.
I'm running split 60 series rims myself with yoko super hajari tyres, but completely understand you wanting to move away from them as no tyre centre will touch them.
Welcome to the club

Hi Dougal, Thanks for the reply, If the H is scaring folk off they may not know with the exception of the engine everything else from what l gather is most likely stock across the 40/55 12V range. l decided to change the rims as the original splits have Dunlop Gripper snow tyres on them they'll be okay in the winter, but they don't seem to be too great in mud. l live in the sticks with a mountainous muddy dirt track & the odd bog. so l thought a set a plain old steel rims nothing fancy as the track gets washed out & tends to eat tyres & alloy rims. Abandoned (townies) 4x4's are the norm until they're recovered. lol
l have asked a couple of local tyre places & its been decades since they worked on splits and they don't have the equipment anymore,
1 of the local tyre places gave me an old steel rim to try, l haven't tried it yet, its off a late 70's Hilux. it looks as though it might fit l can but try it, if it does l'm quids in they have a complete set l can clean up, paint & get tyres for..l was thinking a set of Grabbers ought to do the trick as they get good reviews. l feel like a kid with a new toy...lol
Thanks for the welcome.

My favorite rim is 15".. fitted with 33x12.5R15 tyres.

I wheel my HJ47 from one side of Australia to the other every year at least once.. no power steering. Maybe you're in a area with tremendous amounts of roads with tight turns or have a mobility impairment? Are sure you need to do this upgrade?

Welcome to Mud, your new home! :flipoff2:

As it concerns the 16 inch (non split) rims, you may purchase them from the US vendor you mentioned. Although pricey, they are great and AFAIK, shipped to you direct from Japan (1st pic).
The 15 inch (non split) rims are available at your local Toyota dealership (2nd pic).

As a more modern looking alternative you've got the 16 inch, 60-Series "wagon rims", available at your local Toyota dealer too (3rd pic).

Hi Duncan,

Thanks for the reply.
Once the trucks moving its fine, but l'm getting into my mid 60's living in the sticks with lots of tight turns on the roads & on the single track home, l'm also an off gridder l use my arms for logging etc so l'm thinking ahead for when past work injuries to my elbows/forearms start playing up if the mods done now l can enjoy driving the truck for years to come...

As for the tyres, it currently has 7.50/16c Dunlop Road Grippers on it... l'm wondering what the tyre pressures would be..? l'm still going to look to get 15's non split rims. One of the guys has shown 3 on the thread l'll check them out at the dealers...
Thanks again
Ken

Thanks for the reply, l'll have a look around and see whats available & their prices...

Worth noting that the non split rims are much lighter than the split rims, so easier to change.
On the other hand, you can't easily change a tubeless tyre at the side of the road with hand tools - a spare inner tube is a lot smaller than a second spare tyre :)

True, altho getting an inner tube seems to be a challenge according to a local tyre shop...

Bought mine online. Readily available, and still widely used in agricultural applications and some light goods vehicles. Make sure you get the right valve stem - TR75 IIRC.

Thanks for the info. I'll have a look online & buy some spares, in the meantime l found a set of solid 15' steels off a 79 Hilux, they fit a 60's series so should fit the early 40 according to the guy..l'm checking tomorrow if thats the case. It snowed here last night so l'm keeping the spilts with snow tyres on for the moment. The 15's will be summer/autumn use. 1 issue arose today, the truck didn't like the cold start this morning, turned over once then it was clicking away.so l tapped the starter with a hammer, still didn't start, there were 2 areas in the cab where noise was coming from (sounds like a switch/relay sticking).. behind the dash at the wheel & behind the glovebox...any clues ?. l'm also thinking of replacing the glow plugs & the heat sensor unit... just so its all sorted for next winter.

Took the truck out yesterday for its maiden voyage... went well & had a couple of folks admire it..1 said he had had a 40 in South Africa years ago & was pleasantly surprised by its good condition. Smiles all round...

Let's see some pics of your rig!

The factory glow plug relay is under the glove box, and switches between the different glow modes.
Presumably you activated the relay by turning the key backwards for around 10s to Glow, or until the 'glow controller' under the headlight switch starts to glow red hot (assuming that it is all factory standard which is often not the case).
The glow continues while you're cranking but at a higher power to account for the lower voltage due to cranking (the relay bypasses the 'controller').
If your starter is labouring, or your battery is a bit weak, then this would cause some chattering relays.
Could also be a bad ignition switch, but if the weather was really cold then that's probably battery and tight engine with heavy oil - changed it yet?

Thanks for getting back to me.. the rig had a service in Nov new filter & the oils pretty clean / silky, before going into storage then came out 3 weeks ago..it also had a new battery fitted 3weeks ago 850AH...there's no glow setting on the ignition but there's a glow light on the dash..it seems to work ok.. lights up then goes out as you turn the key.. l'm due to fit a new ignition barrel that'll give me the chance to look at the switch...the starter turned over okay but l thought l heard a click (sticking bendix & shaft ?..old school issue l'm familiar with) When the weather improves l'll remove the starter clean it up & grease it & everything else....lol.
It had occurred to me to renew the diffs oils & gearbox oil as l'm getting the brake fluid renewed (its black)....what oil would you suggest ? Lastly...Do you know of any sources for door hinge pins & door window/interior/exterior rubber for the slides & inside door facia rubber....
Thanks...

And it's definitely charging ok?
I got all my fluids delivered from Opie and it has been a good service.
For the moment I'm running Comma EP80W-90 GL5 in the diffs, and X-flow 5w30 semi synthetic in the engine.
I don't have the gearbox bottle in front of me but same brand.
Note that some modern GL5 oils can be used in GL4 applications too now.

You can search high and low for the perfect oil, but imho, changing cheap oil frequently is better than rarely changing expensive oil.

I'm actually looking to pick up a set of hinge pins in florida next week while im there - can grab you some and mail them if you like (I'm in Bristol).

Not sure exactly which rubbers you need but my search for parts normally starts at euro4x4 in France

Thanks Dougal for the info thats great.. It seems to be charging okay.. once its running its fine the rest of the day..The issue is just with the cold start, thats why l was thinking glow plugs & sensor.
l was going to use non synthetic oil given its age.. priced it at my local trade place £37+vat (5L) l'll certainly look into the diff/gearbox oils. Thx

That would be much appreciated, l'm in the borders if you can pick up 4 hinge pins up & post/courier them to me, l'll pay you via paypal or whatevers convenient for you.

If you've the 2 part window (1/4 glass with opening handle & winder window)... l was looking for the rubbers associated with both & the large rubber which goes around the inner door edge... Then there's the grommets for the wiring, cables thro the bulkhead.

l'll certainly have a look at euro4x4 l also found a place in Australia allfourx4.au.com who specialise in the entire variations of Landcruisers.

Thanks again for the help...Have a great Easter weekend.
