New to me ‘66 40

What should I clear out? the new beam is the same dimensions as what I'm cutting out?

My ’78 came with a 100mm square beam already in there. With the 32” wheels they were very close to the beam so I angled the beam down towards the bottom in front of the wheel. This created More space for the tires.
I don’t know what size tires you want to run but it is much easier to do before you put it in.

Been so long since I have had a good update for the FJ40 Project. Between a new position at work, and honey-do projects in they yard, just haven’t been able to work on the 40.
A few weeks ago however I got the sandblast/paint booth all set up. I then broke down the frame and got it moved into the booth.

Over the last few weeks I have spent time as I could and got the frame sandblasted a bit at a time. Some of the rust putting was pretty extreme.

Other parts of the frame cleaned up much better.

Today I finished sandblasting the frame and got the first coat painted on. Ended up spraying on a coat of rust encapsulator as some of the heavy pitting just didn’t blast out. I also sprayed internal frame coatings inside the boxed-in areas of the frame.

Next weekend I’ll lightly sand the whole thing down, then spray on epoxy primer and final paint. So happy things are progressing again.

Maybe it is an illusion, but in the first picture of the frame alone looks bent. The passenger side looks different from the drivers side.

It is an illusion as I had to use the wide angle lens the camera to fit everything in.

This morning I sanded down the frame and got the epoxy primer and paint down. Once that is cured I’ll pull the frame out of the booth and spray the rear axle and springs, then put it back together.

This weekend I cleared up the rear axle, springs, and some other frame hardware. Today got primer and paint done. Will let it cure for the week and next weekend I can reassemble and have a rolling chassis again.

Got my frame all put back together and have a rolling chassis again. Feels like a major step in the right direction. Could not be happier with the way the paint turned out. Now I can get back to work on the body and get the new floor built.

Yesterday I spent the afternoon working on getting my new floor built. I had to replace the beam between the back of the tub and the floor for the seats. The old one was rotted away so we are replacing it with a .120 wall tube. Had to cut the old body mounts out of the old metal and weld them into the new beam. One was rotted out so we had to fabricate a new part. I wanted to get the new beam welded into the body but we found some rust issues at the back of the rockers which are not going to allow it going in until it is taken out. I made the decision to go ahead and take the body down to a acid dipping company in Eugene to get all of the rust off before we continue fabricating. It was going to happen eventually, so might as well get it out of the way and only deal with clean metal going forward.

Last Friday I made the drive down to Eugene and dropped off the tub for the dipping. They said 2-8 weeks for a return time because they were so busy. Not happy it is going to take so long but it is good that businesses are staying busy and not going under.

Finished tearing apart the transfer case today. Fortunately the gears are in perfect condition. Had to pop out the bearings and remaining seals. Then after soaking the parts in soap I scraped them, used a scotch pad on a grinder, then ran them through the dishwasher. Should have taken more pictures during disassembly but too late. Have a couple more pieces to clean and tape up and then I can paint and start reassembly. Also have the parts from Advance Adaptors to couple it with the NV4500 I have sitting in the garage.

Made a lot of progress in the last few weeks while the tub is away. A couple weeks ago after getting the t-case torn down I finished cleaning and got some paint on it.

This last weekend I got the t-case all reassembled.

I then was able to chop off an inch off the output shaft on the new NV4500 and got the Advance Adaptor conversion installed.
