Today I got a broken bolt out of one of the windshield hinges. Have a couple more that the PO broke off bad to work on. Also got the driver’s side door and hinges off.

For the windshield hinges, anyone know if the pin can be driven out and replaced? Looks to be similar dimensions as the door hinge pins.

Working on breaking the vehicle down for rust abatement. Have almost everything stripped off the body. All parts are being sorted, put in ziploc bags, and placed into bins. Going a little OCD but my standard file-by-pile organization would likely bite me when it is time to reassemble. Once I get everything in bins, I’ll work on fitting and welding up the Metal Tech cage. Also still need to weld on the power steering plates.

Some PO punched a ridiculous hold in the side of the tub. Guessing it was for a fuel tank or some sort of antenna. Got that cut out as low and as high as I could without getting into the seams from the rail or wheel well. Also had to hammer out a small amount of where the metal was pushed in. I have some sheet metal I’ll cut some patches and get them welded in.

I love spring green, have you not considered going back to it? Do you have both taillight brackets? I see one looks good, can't tell on the other, but if so that's really cool because the lights are cheap, but the brackets are no longer avaliable. Unless you like the ones you have...... These guys:

I do like the spring green color, and if I didn't have the terrible yellow paint on it I would have saved the patina on it. But since I'm having to repaint I'm going to go with the cadet blue. I only have one brake light bracket, the passenger side is just two flimsy pieces of flat bar bolted onto the bumper and light. Yet another issue for me to address at some point. It never ends :(

Yeah, I hear you on it never ending, ha! I'll have to check out cadet blue, I have a capri blue 40, but I'm not familiar with cadet. The capri has grey in it and in some light it looks like primer. I'm going to follow your thread and when you are finished maybe we can do a Tillamook Forest trail or two. That's if you don't make it too perfect to get any Oregon pinstriping!

I hope your luck is better than mine. In theory the pin can be driven out, but I hit mine hard and even used heat and it would not budge.

I ended up using my torch to burn out the plastic bushings, then tapped it to make as much clearance on one side as possible, then used a cutting wheel on my Dremel to cut the pin on the other side. It was a big pita.

Got the passenger floor chopped up today. Amazing how thin the metal was in places. Looking forward to getting some fresh metal welded in there.

Also got all the body mounts cut off. A sawzall was definitely an easier way to remove them.

Started to figure out where the new fuel spout would go.

Decided instead of using the flush mount spout, I’m going to cut out and relocate the factory door.

I would try to get the fuel filler as high as possible. The lower it is, the more chance you’ll have some come out when off camber. And it can also be a pain filling it with not much slope to the neck.
Cadet blue is a great choice! When I build another one, that’s what color I’ll go with if it needs a color change.

Are you interested in parting ways with said tail light brackets? Specifically the passenger's side?

As much as I would love to help you out, I'm going to use them. Place a wanted in the classified on here and someone will have one. Also, if I come across another going through my stuff I'll let you know.

Well today was an interesting day. Learned a couple days ago I was exposed to the ‘vid at work, and now several positive tests in the work group. Tonight I got the call I am getting two weeks of paid leave to quarantine. Sounds like lots of time to work on the 40!

Prior to the call though, I got the old fuel door cut out and modified to accept the new filler neck. Tomorrow will work on getting its new location determined and maybe tacked in place. Need to pick up some sheet metal too to starting closing up the other holes in the body I have made.

Was a fairly productive couple days. Today I got the patches cut out to fill in the holes in the tub.

After that I got the rusty bolts for the driver’s side running board cut off. I need to replace the outer rocker panels before it goes off to body/paint. While I was under there I found the rust was worse that I previously thought. I’m going to have to cut out a bunch more floor and get new metal welded in.

Cut off the driver’s side rocker panel. Rust underneath is bad but very fixable. Appears the inner rocker is fine, just need to replace some more flooring.

Also seems as though my air dryer is working pretty well. At sustained usage of the die grinder the water getting through it is significantly less.

Last night I was setting up the PS mounting plates for welding. While clamping the plate down and looking at the spring hangers, made the decision to remove the old spring hangers taken off in prep for a shackle reversal. Got those cut off and frame prepped for the reversal kit.

I also got the mounting plates for the Metal Tech roll cage bolted in place. Next week the welder will get fired up and pieces finally start going back together.

I looked for replacement brackets for my ‘67 and didn’t find any right away. I have since seen them on Marksoffroad site as well as came across some really nice replacement kit someone is making for the early style...I’ll post if I find them again.

Since you’re a welder, I ended up fabbing up my own out of some scrap metal I had laying around.

What I can’t seem to find anywhere is the plastic light cover to protect the back side of the lights from rocks.

Very nice work, those look good. I can definitely make some, sometimes I'm just lazy though.
