Got these 33" BFG A/T's put on today. Let me ask you guys something, how much weight should be put on to balance a tire like this? I know that less is better, but a couple of these tires needed like 6oz and another was like 4oz and the last was 2oz'ish. The 6oz seems like a lot, hell, it looks like a lot on the wheel :meh:

Anyway, without further delay, let me present a white FZJ with BFG 285's! ;)
BFG 285's 5.12.08 copy.webp

Looks good. 6 ounces isn't too bad. I have one wheel just like that. Takes a boatload. Took 8 ounces one time.

Did you ask them to deflate and twist the tire , then re-balance? Most tire shops are too lazy to do it.

Didnt know that twisting the tire could improve the balance. If I ever knock one of these weights off I'll definitely try that when I take it in.

Now I know why people think 285's look small when you start lifting. These tires looked huge sitting in the back of my car, but not so big now that they're on the truck, and will certainly look much smaller once I put the OME 2.5" heavy lift on.

They only look small because you didn't MAN-UP and go with some Mud Terrains!!! :flipoff2:

285s would definitely look smaller from where (up^in the sky) you were last weekend. :D

Looks good Brad, although I have to say it looks small. But pictures can do that.

I'm also pretty tall, so my perspective is a little different. I agree though, it doesnt look much like an intimidating beast of the road in that pic!

By the way, bought a bunch of different flys this weekend at Bass Pro Shops out in Rancho Cucamonga. Huge, cool store. Looking forward to doing some fishin

haha, with all those mud's available on craigslist I was certainly thinking about it. Glad I didnt though, these are PLENTY loud enough as it is!!

I think it looks OK, with another 2 or 3 inches, it will still look OK, the trend now is to go over-huge tires and we're used to looking at that. It's all about getting done what you want to do and those 285's are what I ran for a long time and never had issues.

By the way, what springs did you end up getting? The springs I have now gave me about 2" in the front and 3.5" in the back without all the crap I've added. With all that stuff, it's back down to stock height again, thus the new springs for me :)

I got the 850/863 set up. Same as you right? You're leaving the 851/860? I bet I get at least 3" all around without any heavy mods, maybe more  I'm hoping not, I dont really want/need a huge amount of lift at this point. Also not looking forward to the stinkbug which I'm surely to have.

I'm looking at taking a late night flight back from the east coast on the 6th so I can do the install with you all on the 7th :hillbilly:

I am REALLY enjoying these new tires. 1 or 2 inches makes a big difference! :D

haha, you guys are funny

Anyone have an old BFG a/t 285 I can buy for a spare?

I have a good tread ~ 50% bridgestone MT in that size sitting on the side of the house if you want it for cheap PM me.

My 285' s took me everywhere I wanted to go :D

Going up to 315's is nice for the rocks but /wo regearing MPG and power suffers especially in the mts. If I where DD mine think I would run a set of 285''s and/or 2nd set of wheels.

I can already see an advantage in the 285's for most moderate stuff with that extra little clearance. I'm not as anxious to get the OME slapped on now, the truck looks great, rides well and feels like a truck now. I'm loving it.

Thanks for the offer! I'm gonna try and dig up an a/t on craigslist or something

...wait a minute!

de ja vous, all over again!

Hahahaha - just showing the clearance between the tire and fender flare for you guys installing some heavies next month. :)

hmmm, well, I got on the freeway this weekend for the first time since getting the tires and got a very loud noise from the front left I believe. It was like a very loud and rapid 'thwack thwack thwack'. I hear it at low speed too, but much less pronounced.

I also think I threw two or three balancing weights from different tires. Loud sound of something small and metal hitting the undercarriage....couldnt see anything in the rear view mirror.

So. What do I do here? Could this be a flat spot? Its loud, though interestingly, I think I heard a similar noise (nowhere near as loud) while I had the Revo's on? I'm kinda stumped. Just get it rebalanced??

Never had any issues like this before, but I'm concerned about the potential issues since these are used tires.

(They look great and still make me smile so thats a positive!)

Were the weights taped on the inside of the rim or clipped to the outside? Having the weights outside would make it a quick assessment if it was the weights flying off. I know its stating the obvious but I would start there.
