25's dont have the square front doors though, they're curved like an old CJ to fit around the rear wheelwell, right?

FJ25 hard tops had the 'squared' doors.

Any news on the vin number?

Don't let that owners manual get wet. Right now I'm praying that there is a service manual hidden in there also.

I'll second the confirmation without the VIN. It is a 25. (rear quarter height, spring mounts, and three bolt front fender mount are a dead giveaway. Very often the noses get changed over the years. It most likely has a later model front axle. The models were similar enough that alot of stuff from the 40 just bolts on.

If the original tranny is shot you may have a problem on your hands if you want to keep it original. Come visit us in the 25 Section we can help you out (or just listen and nod) with the more oddball stuff.

Very nice and unusual to have the story from the original owner to now. Many of the 25's that still survive now arrived in the US via returning servicemen.

like Dean said the FJ25 hard tops have the same squared off door openings as FJ40's....... you are thinking of the FJ25 softop versions which have the curved door openings. And just to throw a cruve ball; in the very early FJ40's (61-63ish) soft-top versions had the curved door (FJ25 style) opening that you speak of.......:steer:

the dead give away to me was the curved rear wheel well openings this was only a FJ25 feature and the easiest to spot

here is a pic of a hard top FJ25
and a soft top FJ40

When you say original...you mean as you and your dad had it in those pictures, or do you mean you want to restore it to being a stock FJ25?

That is real cool, man. Great story, good luck with your build. Glad you were able to hang on to it all these years!!

First, Welcome to MUD. You are in the right place and folks here will go out of their way to help you out and often as not save you money.

Welcome from "downunder".

I think you'll find lots of the statistics quoted on this site apply to "USA market only". Even cruisers that left Japan (for other markets like Australia and New Zealand) often got different specifications.

In other words - I think it IS indeed possible that you have a forty that pre-dates their introduction to the USA. (But I wouldn't know for sure.)

Nice to see another forty (or 25 for that matter) saved from the rust-demon.

As lostmarbles said, I also own a 40 series not made for the USA market. As you come along in this sickness you will develop an eye for certain tell tale charecteristics from different years. Folks sometimes forget that those charecteristics may not have ever been present on 40s meant for a different market. Go by the VIN and the firewall plate if it is still there. match it up with the frame and engine number if you can rather than worrying about if yours has a heater, front or rear, windshield washer, hood or windshield frame, etc. one can only begin to imagine the number of parts replaced over the life of your 50 year old gem.

a 40 and he is wrong about the year of the truck... end of game:D
( I hope... :D)

Exactly my point. (all due respect and love to apete)

Congratualations and good luck on the shipping. BTW take your time restoring it just do one thing at a time, it is easier on your wallet and let's you take your time getting to know the rig and paying attention to details. (Unlike my behavior where I'm doing everything possible nearly at once bcause all of a sudden I'm acting like a four year old staring at a new toy just out of reach):grinpimp:

.... I forgot I have the VIN 8FJ25####

.....As lostmarbles said....... Folks sometimes forget that those charecteristics may not have ever been present on 40s meant for a different market.....

But going from his VIN, the people who said it had to be an FJ25 turned out to be correct. :D
