As part of my baselining on my ’94 80 Series, I’m replacing the oil seals behind the crank pulley. Before tearing it down, I noticed the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) had a slight but visible wobble—and I’m pretty sure that’s what was causing the chattering noise I could hear standing outside the truck.

For a minute, I considered just throwing the old pulley back on and calling it good… but the “what ifs” got the best of me. After reading up on the potential damage from running a bad pulley, I went with the usual “while I’m in there” logic and bit the bullet. Ordered a new one from Partsouq — part no. 13470-66030.

It was not cheap: about $100 just for shipping, plus a surprise customs fee. SMH.

Anyway, the part arrived today, and as soon as I took it out of the box I noticed something odd — there’s a collar/ring around the input side (not sure what to call it).

Is that ring supposed to stay on, or is it meant to be removed before install? My old pulley doesn’t have it, so I figured I’d ask before I go prying on it and possibly mangle something.

If anyone’s installed this same pulley or run into this before, I’d really appreciate your insight.

if it fits with the collar run it. will help keep dust out of the seal or if you have a mishap with a belt it wont get sucked in the to engine. i'm glad your replacing it. not much time left on that old one.

I put the same part # on my 1995 about 6mo ago and didn’t notice it was any different than the old one though I can’t say I looked too hard. It seems to be working fine.

Ahh, dust shield — duh. Just threw me off since the old one didn’t have it. Now I’m just hoping it doesn’t come loose and become an issue down the road… but I guess that’s a problem for future me lol.

And yeah, I’ve got a video where the pulley wobble is pretty noticeable. It was starting to eat at me. The dead giveaway was the condition of the rubber — super worn, brittle, and it basically flakes apart with a fingernail. No telling how much longer it had before a catastrophic failure. I’d rather spend $400 now than $2,000+ later.
