I was told to stop by these forums and was surprised by the amount of threads pertaining to the vehicle I just purchased, so thought I'd introduce myself.

A little story so you can all understand my excitement and also dilemma. After screwing my credit in college long ago, my Oldsmobile died. After years and years of payments and taking care of past debts, I was able to get a car from one of those "everyone is approved" lots. It was a Volvo XC90 T6, with 88k miles. I did NOT do enough research and two years later the transmission began to slip. Long story short, the dealer stated that it was due to a leaking axle seal. They replaced it, along with the DIMM and some suspension work. When reinstalling the axle, the mechanic then noted "excessive shaft play" and it was then decided that it did indeed need a replacement. My warranty, however, would not cover it, as the dealer had added the transmission onto the already capped claim from replacing the axle seals, etc. I would need to come up with 7k, which is what the dealer quoted me at. The car had 116k miles, and I check fluids religiously. I was very very upset. I was so upset, that rather than pay for a transmission repair, I traded the car in, still owing over a grand, on a new Fiesta ST. I wanted something small, cheap, fun to drive, and good on gas. Now one year later of driving to central Illinois for work every other week, I decided that the Fiesta is just not comfortable enough for long trips, nor can i easily fit my hockey gear or even go camping easily. It has very low ground clearance, and very stiff suspension. I even replaced the stock 17" wheels with 15" wheels for more cushion from the tires.

I began watching overland/expedition/camping/rock-crawling videos and it made me want to get back into nature, and adventure. I used to love camping, probably due to being in Boy Scouts long ago. I have been drooling over many builds on this site, and really wanted something more comfortable, and capable, something I can keep for a long time.

I got a letter in the mail as my credit has been continually improving, and i was pre-approved for financing per my bank, and they suggested a local dealer. I took a look at their inventory for ****'s and giggles, and noticed a car that had not even been on my radar. A 2003 Lexus GX470 with 80k miles. The price seemed great to me, so I called, and drove the car home that night. It sat on the lot for a single day. The undercarriage is very clean for a rust-belt car, almost as if the car was never driven in snow. It has some scratches, which I actually like.

Now I will park the fiesta, and pay another grand or so until I can list if for sale, at which point I'll have some spending money for this truck. I am not a fan of the wheels or tires, so those are likely to be replaced first. I also want to remove the running boards. I want this truck to look tough, and have more clearance for the day I finally get onto some beginner trails or campsites. I also just don't like the mall cruiser look. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Finally, if anyone around Detroit ever wants company on a drive or help on their rigs, I would love to help. I hope to be able to learn from others, so I would love that opportunity.

Welcome Marc, that is a sharp GX! (especially for the Rust Belt - former Clevelander here) Plenty of great tech to be found here, it's been super helpful for me, hope you enjoy it and the GX.

Advice you asked? Do not be too anxious to modify. Drive it for a while and enjoy it. As you drive it you will figure out how you will want to build it and plan accordingly.

I read that a tad too late, haha. As I drive it though, I wanted to avoid having that mall cruiser look, so I am glad I removed those running boards. I think it looks great, but still unsure about those wheels.

Here is the truck squeezed into my "garage."

I was trying to focus on the wheels so please excuse my amateur photography.
Anyways. here are the Duratracs:

I decided to see if I like the look of black wheels on the car so spent $6 or so and an hour of my time to spray plasti-dip over the chrome. I have it on my winter wheels for my car, and it comes off very easily when needed. I then took a trip to visit family in Paw Paw, then up to Traverse City for the weekend, and finally back to Detroit last night. The Duratracs vibrated a bit more (expected) but I am unsure if they were not balanced well or if it is just the tread. The noise is not as bad as I had anticipated. The truck drove great, and was comfortable even in some heavy rain. I am ecstatic so far.

Here is the first coat on the rear, just to compare:

Here is the truck the next morning:

I think it looks much better personally, but I still think those wheels aren't right for that truck.

cheap upgrade haha

Welcome to the habit that keeps on giving!!!!! Enjoy your great looking GX

So this weekend I joined a friend and his friend's for camping in the Gaylord State Forest Area. It had been my first time camping in many many years. My new sleeping bag worked out great, keeping me warm and dry. The weather was typical of a Michigan fall. We had sunshine, rain (lots of rain), sleet, and snow.

The truck was super comfortable on the drive there. We had sunshine and a beautiful day to start. I did some incredible novice off roading. By off road, I mean off asphalt. Really though, there were some ruts and steep (to me) inclines.

Time for a beer and to relax.

The final morning, I woke to a collapsed tent and some snow. It was so calming and quiet. Rather than get a fire going for the others, I decided to explore and get coffee, and so I did.

I even did some trail cleanup, novice style. Don't laugh, we all start somewhere, haha.

I stopped at Thumb Lake. I was very peaceful. Just a stunning view.

love it! I just went hunting in mine last week. I was able to sleep diagonally in the back with the 2nd row rolled up to the front. Not super comfy but I wasn't freezing my weiner off. I used a sleeping pad and loved not having to set up a tent!

I am completely torn as to whether I want to start with smaller/lighter backpacking gear, such as buying a backpacking stove, for example, or buying a bigger two burner stove and using slides on the truck. It would be much faster setup for camping and quick meals, but then I would be forced to stay near the truck. Eventually I plan on having both, but that will take some time and experience to figure out exactly what I need.

I really want an authome rtt, as I could leave it on year round, but man those things aren't cheap.

I have an old dodge 20ft motorhome I take camping with the whole family so I don't really need to turn my gx into a mini motorhome.
I have tons of backpacking gear and that's what I use when I'm solo. I have a back packing stove, north face tent 0degree bag...
Don't get caught up in all the expo type stuff with drawers and slides and rtt. It's very expensive and weighs a ton!! I did that on my last rig and didn't really use it as much as I thought. Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of expo rigs but most of us don't have time to travel to Brazil and back for 2 months in the summer.

Those are beautiful photos @Marc Scuiletti! Looks like a great time, and that is a beautiful area - used to go up to Grayling every summer for 2 weeks courtesy of Uncle Sam, always enjoyed it up there........

Good point. I simply want to enjoy the truck and when/if parts break, replace them accordingly. What do you think of a foldable sleeping platform versus having 3 and 4 season tents?

Thank you for the kind words. I don't have a camera so was using my phone to the best of my abilities. It was beautiful, and I hope to get back there soon! Do you have suggestions for places to explore for a novice driver (nothing too technical)?
