Hi all,

Long time mudder, first time posting in this section. We recently picked up a '14 GX460 for my wife, which is an excellent companion vehicle to my 100. ITT, I'm just going through it and getting little items squared away.

First thing's first, here are some pictures from the day we picked up. Houston (my Ms) was ecstatic, visible from the first pic.

The truck is nice. 1 owner (2 if you count the lease before buyout), Florida truck, 102k on the clock. Houston didn't want gray, black, silver, or white, so this was pretty serendipitous to find it on the other side of Atlanta from us. I like the brown interior, it's a nice departure from the tans and black/charcoal.

Before we got her (name still pending) home, I ordered new turn signal housings. Both of the originals were cracked and had water in them. Pretty gross, but an easy and cheap fix. Knocked this out this morning, took about 10 minutes to do both sides.

Next up, we knew the PO had installed some of those chintzy chrome handle covers. They didn't look hugely terrible, but they were installed backward, with the rear on the fronts. Meaning, the touch to lock/unlock didn't work. Well, unlock worked by touching the inside of the handle, but lock didn't work because the cover for the rear didn't have the thumb hole cut in it. So I yoinked those off, discovered ugliness underneath, so I've ordered a set of new handles to harvest the chrome trim from.

Front door with lock area covered by the accessory chrome.

What's left underneath the chrome covers.

So that'll be fun to finish fixing when new parts arrive.

I also ordered a new HVAC blower motor, set to arrive any time now, as the existing one has the not-uncommon high pitched whine when in use. It's obnoxious enough that music doesn't fully drown it out.

We've got a set of OEM all weather mats en route. I can't believe people run carpet mats with no protection on top. Will likely order new front carpet mats as well since the originals has foot wear.

And the last thing I've done so far, is to replace the high beam bulbs in the headlight housings. The HID lowbeams are OK as they are, but the halogen highs were a waste of time. Tossed in some Auxbeam bulbs and now we have weapons. Funny thing, maybe some of y'all can shed some light: when I removed the DS bulb, it was sitting virtically in the housing. The passenger side was cocked. As far as I can discern based on the locking tabs, the passenger side bulb can't really sit upright. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it doesn't matter in a reflector housing.

So that's what I've gotten done in the week since we picked her up. All else appears to be very good. We may need some outer TREs and UBJs soon as the boots have split and are greasy, but that's about what I could find. I would be open to some help on one item:

The front passenger door has some performance issues. I can lock/unlock the door from the PS controller, but I can't use the window at all. Additionally, the window doesn't work from the driver's controller either. And on top of that, the PS mirror has no power features to speak of, including adjustment and power fold.

I checked the 30A fuse under the dash this morning and that appears to be fine. Even swapped with another fuse in the block with no change. I have pulled the PS door panel and found nothing obviously disconnected or damaged. No, window locks are not turned on. It just seems like there's something not connected, but if that's the case, it's elusive. Debating swapping the outer mirror control ECU from the DS to the PS to test that, but I think it would be a really big coincidence if the mirror and windows are 2 totally independent issues. What does the braintrust think? FWIW, the windshield has been replaced, although I haven't seen any evidence of water intrusion during the last few days of rain.

Plans for the truck aren't huge. I offered her a set of wheels and 33s for Christmas but she may decide against that. At the very least, it'll get some nice ceramic tint and something other than the Chineseum tires it has now. She'll be the new 'house vehicle', which takes the onus off of my built 100. 37s on that truck seem more feasible now!

Maybe worth mentioning, I just discovered that the light on the PS window switch does not turn on like the rest. Going to try a new controller and see if that helps. To me, I would think if the controller was bad, I'd still be able to get movement from the DS controller. :meh:

Update:

I swapped over the mirror control module from the DS to the PS. Different part numbers so I didn't have high hopes, but the connectors went right in. Anyway, that didn't work either.

So I've ordered a new PS controller and a new window computer module for the PS (picture below is of the PS part #)

Congrats on your wife's new toy!
With so many MUD posts, I assume you don't leave your vehicles stock. Will she allow you to do any mods????

I buttoned the door panels back up until the new items arrive.

We noticed both side view mirrors are pretty dark, kind of bronzey. Are they supposed to be like this or has the auto-dimming glass failed? Both sides are identical, with a perfect clear perimeter around the whole mirror.

Decided to try a test spot on the hood before beginning paint correction. It's in fine shape, just has some tired clear on the hood. I did a single pass with a blue heavy polish pad and some 3D-One. I think she'll clean up very nicely. Will ceramic coat the car when the paint correction is all complete. It may be a few weeks before I can commit the time.

This one is going to stay as stock as possible. With all those 'mud posts come a lot of mods on the 100 and with those, quirks. My 100 is triple locked, regeared diffs and case, has full adjustable suspension, armor, yadda yadda. It's been the house truck for a while but that limits what I can do with it for fun. Most this will get will be bolt on accessories like lighting, maybe some C-rated 33s and nice wheels.

My wife and I both had our own Hundy's. Both were '98's and Riverrock Mica green. Yeah, I know it sounds a little weird, but she wouldn't let me mod hers so I bought my own which had the tan leather that I preferred, she had gray in her rig. I too triple locked and regeared with 35" tires. I used the rotating knob that some of the front and rear locking factory 80 series had, and made it work for my TJM front locker and factory rear e-locker. After adding the max suspension lift, I built my own 1.75" body lift so I could get those 35" tires to fit without rubbing. We really loved those Hundy's, but they were both approaching 300k miles each, the paint was all burnt out (clear coat almost all peeled off) and most the leather interior was gone.
Hence the GX460!

Mine were super dark. Its the electro tint film. I replaced mine with non tinting for like $40. The tinting ones didn’t come aftermarket when I looked but that was 5 years ago.

My power fold had broken but taking it apart and cleaning the gears and mechanisms fixed that.

Not sure what up with your power door locks and windows. Sounds like a ecu thing but not sure what both have in common. Maybe try the troubleshooting table in the manual if you have a meter and the patience. I usually go to dealer for that sort of troubleshooting then fix it myslef.

The GX is a great platform, but the return on investment falls off once you get over 34/35s.

I think i can actually aquire and build an 85 pickup or 4runner for the price it would take to get a J150 on 37s or 40s.

Agree, if you can find a solid axle pickup or 4R. They're getting pretty rare and pricey.
Building up an early Toy would only work as a trail rig and/or a local only daily driver. Personally, I wouldn't even want to think about a long overland trip would be like for my wife and I in something that old. o_O
I don't know how Matt and Stacy (https://www.youtube.com/@ToyotaWorldRunners ) overlanding from BC (Canada, not Baja California) down to the tip of South America in a rebuilt mid 1970's Toyota Chinook!
But, I guess when my wife and I were that young, it probably would not have bothered us.
In my old age, I think I've become more posh (as the Aussies like to say). We just got back from a quick 4 day trip to Hawaii for a very close friends celebration of life (memorial). For the sake of cost and being within a couple miles of our friends, my wife and I stayed in a "backpackers" hostel/lodge. Yeah, we had our own room but I complained because of this and that and I'd become to accustomed to Marriott properties. See what I mean?
Then, thinking about it, this backpackers hostel, it was nicer than the bungalow we stayed at for our surf trip in Fiji when we were younger and I had absolutely no issues staying there! And even nicer than other accommodations we've had on several trips to Africa. At least we didn't get electrical shocks when taking a shower when accidentally touching the metal shower head!

I'm getting too soft...

I plan on keeping the gx until it returns to the earth via a cloud of rust.
Being able to drive 3 hours, wheel for 8 hours then drive 3 hours home is huge.

I have one of the hardest obstacles on the northern front range close to me. The trail head is 45 minutes from Loveland.

A solid axle trucks on 37s or 40s is required for the severe trails here, unless your a masochist.

I did that a few times this summer.

I got sick of yelling "Oww! F---!" Every time that I hit a rock.

Agreed! Where we live, we're almost always having a 2 to 4+ hour drive JUST to get to trails!
After bouncing around for 8 hours, on the way home it feels good to sink into a comfortable seat with seat heater on your back soothing you from the day's bouncing, listening to some good blues on a fine stereo and my best friend (wife) next to me.

Updates: I swapped in a new (used) window controller and still the same thing- window switch light doesn't turn on like the other 3 doors and no activity from the window. Just for fun, I tried the press and hold reset procedure, still no dice.

The mirror computer arrives in a day or two. If that doesn't fix the mirror, I'm going to make an assumption that the two issues are somehow related.

I decided to go ahead and do the whole paint correction on the car. All is done now except the roof and hatch. Had lots of water spots and very dull clear coat from the sun. With the exception of but guts that have etched some clear on the front bumper, the paint came out nicely. The color is beautiful now.

By the way, the truck shall be named Claret, or Clare for short.

The funny thing is that even with 37s or 40s on a SFA truck, is the wheeling much faster than just hiking up the obstacle ;)? Usually it is slower than using your own two legs :).

The last time I did a CO trip it was with my buddy in his JK Rubicon. He had a hard time keeping up on the highway with the weaker V6 and on most of the trails as well, due to the SFA not riding or handling anywhere as well as my IFS. He did, however, do the Poughkeepsie Gulch wall that I didn't attempt (I would have lost a bumper at the minimum), and he had an easier time on a mogul-filled section of Medano Pass than I did. Overall, the GX performed better than the JK did for >99% of the trip miles.

Thats not really an option for me, I have a service connected back injury. 😉
