New FJ40 H55 top plate reproduction project: Interest? Price Tolerance?

If available today, much would you pay for a h55 top cover kit specific to the FJ40?

So on the on the FJ43L
K = 9 1/2" ring gear
05 = 3.70 diff gearing
3 = 2 pinion limited slip

Because it has a Toyota limited slip it has to be a FF rear axle. Unless it would just have limited slip in the front which is a FF. Could not see Toyota adding extra traction to just the front since it's weaker with a Birfield. Adding traction to the front and allowing the rear to spin a single wheel just asking to break something in the front

#2 please

Seriously there are craploads of aussie blokes crying out for these and h55f are like super common out here. Heck I'd grab one for my future 40 if the price was right and they could be shipped to aus.

We have about 20 votes so far on price. With those votes and as @Indestructible 47 notes, craploads of aussies, we have a small market in need. I am going to bump this for a few days to keep the post fresh and keep getting more votes in to help with a pricepoint/fabrication breakeven.

And by #2, I want to clarify...

The "one in one" out means that we use the 60 series top cover with all its shift rail innards and swap those parts to the 40 cover. The 60 series cover is then bare. There is labor involved in this and so the price will need to reflect that.

As my father says "I hate springs with ball bearings" I personally would go for option #2 myself.

I want the kit that I don't have to do any major cutting (read none) or welding. It would be nice to have a plug and play with the top plate AND the trans cover with the shifter holes cut in the right location. The easier it is the more I'd pay.

What year 40 series do you have? The newer the cruiser the easier it is. This is why I will add a five speed to my 79 verses one of my other cruisers.

Pre 1/79 would required a custom made transmission cover to be a simple bolt on, definitely more than a somple additional piece. There is a bolt on inspection cover available for 1/79-9/82 40 series but that still requires cutting the transmission and transfer case holes.

I’m interested but don’t know how realistic the cost would be to what I have in my head for everything and what I should be spending on a 2nd car.
I’ve seen a few venders post up complete new T-cases for the later model 40s that have benefits to my 78s T-case.
From what I saw on those the cost was alittle less than I thought would be for a new T-case.

If always wondered what the parts cost would be for everything to make it work correctly in my 78 but havent wanted to bother a vender just window shopping.

It may be easier for people like me that haven’t seen price ballparks of what all the other parts in the 55 trans conversation cost.

I was thinking in my head New trans,T-case,and little bits like crossmember and etc would be around 10k from a shop but I may be way off hopefully I’m over. A shop does need to make money selling to us and I’ve always been under the impression mr t doesn’t cut deals to help others.

It’s late and I’m rambling

But basically to be blunt depending on how much everything else is would factor into how much I would be willing to pay or just make myself happy with 4 gears. I see tremendous value for the land cruiser community in what is being done here and hope it is as successful as can be for those that are involved so they are rewarded for their work and time.

X2

Need to factor in driveline mods, hand brake. Few options there. Seen where the bellhousing motor mounts were used but others do not recommend it. Would also think age of the cruiser would pay into cost. Pre 73 will take more mods then 73-78. 73-78 is harder than 79+. Easier after 8/80 then 83+ being a straight bolt in with the right pieces. Really hard to give a general cost for all years.

I would prefer to buy just the top plate with whatever 40 specific parts and swap whatever over from the 60 top plate myself. I assume there are others who have already installed the H55F and would just like a better shift cane placement and don't need to address the driveline/e-brake issues. That put me in the $500 bucket. I would buy it today. I can see value in the kit for those starting from scratch.

I voted. Sub $500. Only because I found an original top cover in great shape for $800 shipped from oz about a year ago.

Option 1 is rather worthless as you’ve described it. It needs to include the two steel shift parts that differ between the 60 and 40 series covers. Without those in hand, it is practically impossible to recreate them from scratch. If you provide those with the cover, it’s truly a shift of the labor to the customer, you’ve provided all the custom parts needed.

I do think you need to keep the price point under $650 for my modified option 1. The cost of everything else adds up fast.

X2 on the sub $500. In the same boat as far as having one already. Most of the other items to make it work have collected enough for a second one. Would be curious how many units it would take to keep it under $500? Few years ago someone was trying to get seventy-five people to invest a $1,000 each to make it happen.

Count me in for 5-10 at the right price. I've got a pallet load of H55F's that could get easier to sell with top plate options in the mix too!

Options #1&2 would be best for us, we can turn them into #3 using our transmissions giving us pre-assembled solutions for the B/F/1HZ variants.

Bumping a sleeping thread.
Hopefully not a dead one.
