How about I just send you a new carb and see if that will fix it. Just pm me your address. I don't like unhappy customers.

I appreciate the support.

I will install my second carb and pull the first one (With TLCs, I love having spare parts). I love the carb, just wondering what its issue is. Other than excessive rich at times, it runs great. Any ideas, or do you want to wait until you perform exploratory "surgery" on the carb before commenting?

Just got in the carb, Trollhole, its beutimus. Can't wait to slap it on the 2F. Have to get new gasket set first though unfortunately. Might be a couple of weeks til I get her installed. Great product. Thank you.

New Carb Install Problems

Just got the new carb yesterday. Thanks! I do have some questions about the install though. First, I have a new throttle cable to install with the carb and the bracket hole on the carb seems to be to big. Am I missing some parts. Second, my vac advance line is metal with a threaded fitting, do I just cut it off and use a rubber line? Third, I see there is a solenoid on the carb with a wire to be connected. I didnt have that on my old carb. How does that need to be wired? Ive read you can wire that off the coil. Is that ok? If ok, that would come off the ignition side correct? Lastly, there is a metal tab that is hitting the tube that goes to the pvc valve off the carb insulator and not letting the carb seat all the way down. A quick shave with a dremel would take care of that but I would like your opinon before I do that. Attached are some pics to better understand what I've written. Thanks a bunch!

That is the wrong throttle cable. Get one for a 72-73 FJ40. Cut it off and use a rubber line. (save the brass fitting) Solenoid off the coil will be fine.

Yes you can grind that tab down a bit to clear. Also I tell people to bend the tube down slightly. But in order to do this you have to be really, really careful and put the spacer in a vise and brace both sides. Otherwise you will break the spacer. And that is a pain in the a$$ to find another one.

Interesting manifold. Don't see many 4bolt carb siamese manifolds.

This is the cable your looking for. Spector sells them. Make sure you get the nuts as well.

Thanks. I'll get a new "new" throttle cable. I thought it was the same as the old carb. No biggie. The intake and carb I have according to the PO is from a FA truck. I was installed by Toyota in late sixties or early seventies, he still even had the old paper work and pricing. Thanks for your help!

Install questions

Ok.....Finally installed my Trollhole carb tonight (pretty cool that you have carb named after you) and have a few questions. I installed and could not get her to start until I manually closed off the choke.....however once It started it just does not sound right (used to have a Weber). Sounded like a fluttering bird that could not get off the ground though it was flapping the hell out of its wings ....lol. That is the best discription I can give.

I shut her off released the choke and it would start but would fizzle out and back fire...more like the tin lizzy. Checked the fuel bowl the first time I could swear that it was little under half full. the second time it looks kind of low less that quarter full. I have a brand new gas tank that I installed a couple months ago and will put a new fuel filter in tommorow.

I did not have the air filter assembly installed when I did this.

the vacume tube that comes out of the base of the carb is attached to the inside nipple of the dizzy and the line from the outer nipple on on the dizzy is attached to the nipple on the intake manifold infront of the carb.

hose from the brake booster is not connected.

The hose that connecst to the PVC valve is connected to the long tube nipple that comes our of the rear side of the intak manifold.

Can only start one time after starting with choke. If I want to start it a third time choke has to be engaged.

Also on the bottom part of the intake there is a eighteen mm bolt with w small vacum nipple as a larger 3/4inche? nipple that I have nothing conected to. What connects to these?

Any Thoughts?

Does you idle solenoid click when you turn the ignition switch on? Does it have power?

The connection from the dizzy to the manifold needs to be plugged.

Post some pics

I think I got it licked vacum leak forgot to attach the brake booster hose....oops pers like a kitten...will test drive once I get my air filter from Napa in the morning....Thanks

Trollhole,

Ok I think I got most of this thing licked took short drive this morning and the only issue is when I floor it on a aggressive start right around 25 mph it flutters when i try to peg it....don't think it is a vaccum leak as it seams to flutter through the tail pipe verse the motor...could be wrong though....will change fuel filter to be sure that it is getting enough gas....

I will check the timing in the am....and send a pic off the distributor. When i tap the pedal i get a slight hesitation but it easily powers past it once you get to 2nd gear and press nearly to the floor it starts to sputter but at the vary bottom of the pedal it will start to power past the hesitation. Does the same thing in 3rd and 4th

Ok I just had my mechanic reset the timing and he noticed that the distributer is very hard to turn. He said that there are bearings inside that have worn and it needs replacing. Also it has caused the distributer to move in the bracket and has worn the base of the distributor and it will no longer clamp when tightened...arhhh

Looks like I need a new distributor.....arh

Carb adjustment question

Marshall,
Finally got the carb installed (3/79 FJ40) & have a couple of adjustment questions. Starts fine with the choke, but once running & warmed up will not run with the choke in the open position (will only run w/ choke in the middle position). Seems to be running rich as you would expect in this position, but if the choke is pushed in, it will immediately die.

Timing is set correctly, have power to the idle solenoid (can hear it when key is turned on & off). Tho when its running seems to make little difference if its disconnected / reconnected.

Vacuum line connected from side/base of carb to dist advance inboard position (outboard is plugged). All other vac lines on intake are plugged. Brake booster vac connected to intake vacuum. I installed fitting on top / driver side of carb which goes to PVC valve.

Fuel level in site glass just below middle position when running. Throtttle & choke cables work fine w/ no binding.

Other than the idle screw it looks like there's only one adjustment (idle circuit?) which when adjusted in or out makes little/no difference. What is the basic/initial setting supposed to be when you set them up?

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Gabe

Really sounds as if you have a vac leak. What kind of exhaust manifold do you have. Gasket condition?

Have you checked to make sure your intake manifold doesn't have a crack under the carb area.

How about posting some pics. I don't have a problem sending you a replacement. I just want to make sure it's not something overlooked. You would be surprised how many times that happens. That vein said if it's not a vac leak most likely the idle circuit could have some trash in it.

Headed out of town for a couple of days, will send when I return. As part of the build, this is a new carb install, tank removed & cleaned, same w/ hard lines. all flex fuel lines replaced, new fuel filter, desmogged, all new vac lines, air filter....
