New 80 series Cup holder design:

I'm the nuclear cup holder guy. Currently I'm only using one of the ram mounts for a cup holder and one to hold my cell phone.

I'd be all over this design. A nice feature would be contouring specific to the 80 so high strength double sided tape could be used instead of drilling screen holes. I'd probably make the '80' a little more discreet too. Or if you keep making cool products you may want to think about your own farm of subtle branding?

I kinda had the same feeling on the 80 too. It looked good on the computer but once printed it was a little much. I already changed the font from an emboss to a subtle engrave. The "80" is now quite subtle but visible. I plan to make a few more minor changes over the next couple days and then print a final prototype in the correct colors. Pics will follow soon after.

I might take you up on that offer. Right now I need to focus on finishing up my current designs before I migrate into something new. I will keep you posted.

Let me know when you're ready, It's just sitting in my garage sucking up dust and money...I would gladly donate it for the purposes of research and development! :smokin:

Maybe you could print a high-strength steering column clamshell while you're at it...I'm friggin sick of my broken one, and they're hard to find in one piece (I mean two-piece that isn't broken into more pieces).

Great design! I would jump in and buy one as soon as they were ready. I am tired of spilling my drinks on the trail!

Why even have "80"? Then you have to make an "LX" version. Instead keep it TEQ and you serve both markets.
Why? Is the LX not an 80? It doesn't say Land Cruiser.

Personally I would prefer it plain. The TEQ on the inside of the cup holder is a nice, more subtle, touch.

Maybe it has been covered, but is the inner diameter of the holder without the insert in place just a tad wider than the disco cup holder?? If it was, then my damn Nalgene bottle would actually fit in and not wedge into the top half inch of the holder.

The diameter dilemma was a real PITA. If you go to a larger diameter then you can fit some of the larger cups, BUT the fast food chain cups (which all have the same bottom diameter) become loose and unstable. What I did was made the diameter of the black insert a tad larger to allow a fast food cup to sit all the way into the bottom but with a tight fit(which the disco cup doesn't quite do). I then made the inner diameter of the actual holder (without black insert) about 5% larger as well to handle an even larger than normal cup/bottle. The main reason for that 5% increase was to fit my sports water bottle I often have in the car. It's an awkward size and it just doesn't quite fit in the disco cup holder. There are still certain fluid containers that just don't fit either way. Either to tight or too loose. I realized if I tried to make this cup holder too universal it wouldn't really be good for any type of cup. I just had to go with what I thought were the most common sized cups and hope that met the needs of the most people. If the demand is there to make custom sized inserts for specific types of cups then I am open to that possibility.

Edit: If you send me a pic of your specific bottle I should be able to track one down and test fit it on my prototype. I am curious to know. My guess is that it is very similar to the bottle I used for test fitting.

its one of these, 1 liter size, I think all the Nalgenes are the same size but could be wrong.

It does not need much more room, and the 5% might just be enough. The inner liner being slightly larger is great too.

Not seeing any of your pics.

Are you on a network computer at work? My work computers block all of my pics. I post the pics on photobucket then drop the IMG into the post. It works great as long as I am not at work.

I think my wife has a red one of those. I will see how it fits when I get home tonight.

So I planned to stretch my design process out over the next couple weeks, but after all the feedback you guys got my wheels turning. I tried to go to bed early but my brain was spinning. I decided to stay up and crank out my ideas. I think I got about 2 hours of sleep last night. 8 cups of coffee later and the worst "twitches" I have had in my life; and I have some new ideas to show. Lets get some more feedback. You guys said you wanted a more subtle "80" so I did that. You wanted two cups; done. You wanted a cell phone/wallet/coins/crapola holder; done. I also made a couple subtle design changes to the overall look. The recessed area under the front was removed. That caused clearance issues, but I then moved the entire cup holder inward toward the driver by 5/8" which gave me back the needed clearance. I also tightened up the arch underneath that mounts to the center console and added more locations for the 3M adhesive. Hope you guys like all the updates and aesthetical changes.

I will be placing an order for number 3. It looks like a perfect solution for me. I use the dead space on the console just right of the transfer case shifter to lay my iphone. The Disco cup holder would typically eat in to that space and I'd have to find another place for my phone. This should solve that conundrum. My only thought on improvement would be to make the cell phone holder wide enough to hold my phone parallel to the dash so I can see when I get a call/text/email while a drink is in the cup holder, which may be a non-issue anyway. Thanks for putting all this stuff together for us, everything looks great so far. Now make me "TOYOTA" grill, plastic man. :bounce:

Also, if you don't run into any copyright issues, I wouldn't mind seeing some of these that say "Land Cruiser" and not just "80". NLXTACY, nobody even knows what an LX is. :flipoff2:

Will there be a right and left side for the one with the cell phone pocket? Keep up the good work.

I would suggest, for the cell phone cubby, adding a slot wide enough for a charging cable and a notch on bottom to allow the plug to be in with the phone not upside down. You only need to make for iPhone. Samsung is ghey :flipoff2:
