Well, I just realized yesterday that it has been about two years since I have had the cruiser..... Then I did some searches on MUD of my first posts and found that it was actually the 10th of May when I got my Baby! So I guess I missed our anniversary, and she is letting me know it... :whoops:
So yesterday while in line at Jack N Da Bizox I noticed that I had a squeak while just rolling and not on the breaks. I knew I had a squeak when on the brakes because I am NOW probably way over due for rotors! But I thought it was weird that they would squeak while not on the brakes at all?
That's not it, last week I noticed my exhaust getting much louder. I think I have a crack near the cats from a past off-road trip where they took some good hits and it is getting worse. It's mostly when it's cold and has less of a rattle noise once warm.
Anyway looks like I am going to be dumping some $$ which I would rather not do right now since my job is really iffy and I am going to be dumping a $GRAND$ into learning a new 3D Arch program to help step-up my resume and get into a new job with more growth opportunities. So it looks like I am going to have to get my hands dirty and do some of my own maintenance, I don't mind getting the hands dirty when it comes to MODS but Maint is WORK to me and I hate it.... :wrench::flipoff2::wrench:

Must be the weight of the Hanna rear bumper...:D
I wont say no if you give it to me! :hillbilly:

Check the wear indicator on the brakes.. if your not applying the brakes but hearing a noise it's probably that.
Hopefully its not been too long else you could need not only rotors but calipers too if you've grinded through your
pads. Screw the exhaust.. leave it for now. You can live with that.

Dave - Are you sure its not his rear bumper? :hillbilly:

If I were closer I would be happy to give you a hand. Does the exhaust need replacemnet or rewelding? I also have a great exhaust guy but he is in Lomita. Sorry

Tim

I have to check my records but John at Sd Trux just did one set not to long ago, I think the rear pads. Maybe I am getting close up front.... Anybody know off hand how much cheaper the stock rotors are compared to the slotted DBA's? I would love to upgrade but I would be fine with stock too. Also I couldn't find rear DBA's for the 80's last time I looked.

Yeah I was thinking some patch work on my exhaust would hold up for a little while till' I have the funds to replace the whole thing.

Yeah, a hand would be great (but I understand the distance) since I have never done brakes before. I know, but I just don't like anything about maintenance work. It's funny because my Dad loves it, wish he lived closer!

Hey Dan, post up your Muffler guys info. I need to try someone new, oh and can I borrow your jacks when I finally do this brake job? I haven't upgraded my wimpy jack stands yet. They were fine for my Supra's & S-10 but not so good for the Iron Pig...:pig:

Hey Mark,

The guy I used for my 80 exhaust was Bob's discount muffler in Little Italy and he did an ok job.

If I were you I would check out Jerauld's muffler in National City. I used them on my FJ55 and they did a kick a$$ job and will be using them on my 80 in a few months to put on a glass pack.

You are welcome to use my jack and stands for the brake job and if I am available I will be glad to lend a hand  or get dirty. If you are replacing your rotors I would recommend doing the wheel bearings while you're in there. I have a fish scale for the pre-load, brass drifts to knock out the bearing races, and 54mm hub socket you can use for this.

 Dan

Thanks Dan, you Da Man....

Well I just went over to John at SD Trux to see what he had on file for what we did. And they replaced the front brake pads about 8K miles ago, and I opted to not get the rotors turned because I was wanting to replace them with DBA's. They noticed DS rear was wearing un-even from a visual inspection but there was still plenty of pad so we left it alone and I didn't have them tear into the rear brakes.
So from listening to it today he noticed the noise was coming from the back and I decided to just have his boys take a look at the rears so we can see what's really going on. So I guess I will see wear I am at a little later today.

Of coarse a birf job may be in order and then I am sure she will forgive you for putting all that weight on her rear end :D

Just do a pad slap in the rear to get you by if you have too.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. I just had John do it since he already had the truck and I have WAY too much going on in my life this month. And instead of trying to rush and do this I am going to buy the front rotors, then the back rotors, and lastly the birf stuff. Buying all that over a few months will be much easier on me and then I can just set aside a weekend to do it all at once. Then it will be more like a project rather than maintenance.

I think my breaks are almost done too, maybe we can get a "brake service meet and greet" in the coming months

I also have a great exhaust guy but he is in Lomita. Sorry

Is it Vern Sweeny? He is the man. :grinpimp:

I got DBAs from Man a Free front and rear. About the same price as stock IRRC.

It is far but if you find yourself up in OC or want to drive up I would be happy to weld up your exhaust at my shop, gratis.

I appreciate it Mo, I will be up North this weekend & next but not along the coast. Moreno Valley this weekend and the High Desert (Ridgecrest) next weekend. Part of why I just had John slap the pads on. Otherwise I would be trying this on my own this afternoon before heading out of town tomorrow.
I think Darryl of SD Trux said he noticed a gap in the exhaust coming off of the head. I do have a nice dent wear the down pipe 90's back so that was probably the culprit and has gotten worse over a year.

what ARCH program are you trying to learn?

have you tried Lynda.com? they have tons of programs with training you can do over the net for a couple hundred bucks.

I am going to learn Revit, I have been doing Auto CAD for 11 years and it's looking like Revit is going to become the new standard preferred by General Contractors so I am going to jump on the boat and ride the wave.... I will check out the site, thanks...

I have heard good things about Sweeny but I use Mike at Supreme Muffler on PCH and Oak...

I have used Valley Muffler in Santee, the younger blonde guy there is real cool and the prices are very fair.

I dont know if John mentioned it to ya but I was just in there last week with a squeak and ended up having to have my front pads replaced and the rotors machined.

Oh and I had to have my front winshield replaced the other day after a rock but a 12" crack in the damn winder!

Now im due for a 12oK service. And the gas prices keep going up. I love driving my 80 around town but have not wheeled in a long time and still sometimes think about buying something else to replace the cruiser.

Its not that im bitter for having to spend a few dollars thats not anything I wouldnt have to deal with in another car its just that sometimes I would rather have something thats made for driving on the road more than on rocks. And sum more more uumph! AAAand better gas mileage, im averaging about 10 mpg lately. :grinpimp:
