I'm looking to buy a pig and Iv owned 40's and 60's all my life but never a 55 and i know nothing about them. I need a DD and family hauler to replace my suburban. I got the money to go this route and have something very rare. And my plans are when I find the right truck I want to do and engine and tranny swap with a gm crate 5.3(or it maybe over kill but the LS3)e-rod motor and a 4l65e auto tranz then drop a set of 60 series pumpkins in the axles with 3.73 gear and disks if it doesn't have. Then update interior with some new seats maybe out of a suburban with heat and cool also front/rear a/c don't know how I'm gunna pull it off but I'll find a way. I want to know if this is wrong to do to one of these truck and would love your input in the problem I have. Also this is by no means a hack job it will be done correctly. I really respect all landcruisers and originality of the good ones and I hate to see good ones cut up by stupid owners this is something I have believed for most of my life and it extends far beyond just land cruisers

Good luck in your Pig quest!

It sounds like you have a very clear vision for your future Pig. It will probably take some time to build it.

It might make life easier to find you a separate DD to drive while you build your Pig. That way no pressure to hurry your Pig project along.

Find the best body you can, the exterior, interior and bits and pieces are the hard part on the 55s. Everything else is pretty much direct plug and play from the 40/45s, your V8 swap will be pretty straight forward. As far as the 55/80 option, I've driven a nicely built 80 since 2002 and while I love it ... it's got nothing on the coolness factor of a 55 ;) I can't go to the local hardware store or gas station in the pig w/o getting thumbs up and people starting conversations. You don't get a second look in an 80 unless you are a nice looking chick (wife gets all kinds of comments when she drives it). Now of course I wish my 55 had the coils and triple lockers, but the 80 will be up for sale when I get my pig where I want it :pig:

Ideas

Come to the right place. Rust is an issue with the 55s - almost no new OEM parts. GM motor and trans will help driveability (iron Pig) the 60 pumkins are a great idea and real easy to do - should do the 60 Disc brakes at same time. You din't mention PS - but with everything else you should consider - especially if your going to be adding rubber. 2X the trim and rubber parts - really hard to find. Stockpile them whern you find them.

Other considers to make a truly unique rig - ya gotta share progress pictures with us - its not an option its mandatory

LRF tank up to 55 gallons if you find the right one.

H55F trans if you change your mind on the auto

Withe V8 some lift but don't ignore shocks!

Need help, technical or other, this is the place - chances are somebody has already been where ever your going on your project.

Have fun - remember the Pics!!!!
