Resurrection time

I just snapped off the lower passenger side shock mount nut, flush to the shock eyelet - the shock is off and I'm drilling it out, tapping it and putting a bolt in there. What a pain in the ass.

I fully expect to snap the driver side lower shock mount - I always get hosed at what should be an easy job.

If you cut off part of the nut right up against the threads, the relief in pressure combined with the heat should release it.

No soup.

There was no cutting to do - that was flush when it came off.

I could've welded a nut on to the post, heated it and tried to back it out, which in hindsight is what I should have done, but I've already drilled it and will tap it tomorrow and hope it works for a few weeks until I cut the entire deal off and have a friend weld another back on.

The other one. The one that wasn't busted when you originally posted.

And I am posting for posterity, assuming others will find this thread one day.

Cheers

Drill a small hole through the stud and run a cotter pin through it like the earlier models.

It's done, after the tap broke off inside the lower shock mount - so I hammered the s*** out of it with a cold chisel and drove it all the way back and smashed it and tapped again, then hacksawed any tiny bit of old post so the new bolt would sit flush to the mount and was done, but what a pain in the cock.

Heat first on all those next time. I'll be knocking out the rears this week and the first thing that happens is heat.

Resurrection time (again):

Same thing happened to me this weekend on my FJ45. Passenger side was a piece of cake, but snapped the driver side threads off with the castle nut. In the prior post, Northbound seemed to have tapped through the whole shock pin. Would this be more advisable than just hacking off the pin, drilling out the tab, and running a thru bolt?

My only worry here is there is no support on the front side of the shock, meaning the thru bolt could flex, bend, or snap. Would this occur with a Class 10.9 or 12.9 Strength bolt?

I know Cruiser Matt has replacements. No issues with cutting and welding on a new one. Was just looking for an lower cost, easier solution to just move on to the rear.

This thread might help also....SOR also has a solution, but I would assume after they include their high shipping prices Matt's will be the same cost. 😜

I looked at ordering the upper shock pin then just welding it on to the lower tab, but at $55 and SOR's "estimated" ship cost, if rather just order from Cruiser Matt, like you said.

I don’t know if they still do it, but for many years back in the 90s and early 2000s, Rancho included those pins with several of the shocks they offered for the 40. I managed to accumulate a couple of dozen of them, I think I used one to make a custom shock mount on the blue 45, using part of a shackle plate (with a convenient 5/8” hole already drilled in it) for the mounting tab. Total cost: 0

I would be happy to toss a free Rancho pin with any qualifying order…until they’re gone.😉

Whenever I see them on an axle, I grab'em. I use them to relocate the shock mount to the back of the rear spring perch like earlier 40's. Then make my own U bolt flip kit.
