so im about to look at a 85 runner this man has agreed to sell in the el paso area its hard to find one this year due to efi and it being solid axle only problems i saw were it was wrecked and its automatic how much should i be looking at buying it for ??

No link to an ad, no photos, no idea. Sorry but we need more info. If it was in unbelievable shape, with a fully cherry SR5 interior then you might be talking $6k, so I guess it's anywhere between $1.00 and $6k (IMHO).

Good luck and give us some more info if you can.

First, do you want this to do hard core offroading? If yes, then you are going to want to completely redo the front suspension, so you may as well look for a good deal on a newer IFS truck and SAS it. If you are not into hardcore offroading, then just find a good deal on an IFS truck, you don't need the solid front axle.

The third option is if you are just an old school guy/gal and want a solid axle in which case an 85 with average miles (250k +/-) that's wrecked and has an auto should be around 1.5-2k if it's not wrecked too bad and it's in good running shape.

i do alot of off roading but been using my z71 tahoe i can do a whole lot more with the yota ive got allota buddies with the same runner picked theres up for about 1k easy anyways i just went to go see this one they backed out of the deal so the search continues i want a solid axle factory the bones yards out here are all out out of axles and 22re motors and stick shifts so the only luck we got out there is if someone sells one which isnt likely unless you got deep pockets

The only upside to a stock solid axle is that it comes with the axle... The steering is bad, the spring mounts are flimsy and in the wrong spots. If you want to wheel it you're going to end up changing everything, so you may as well not look just for an 85. There is nothing wrong with the Toyota IFS front end. It's as bulletproof an IFS system ever offered on a consumer vehicle.

not dogging the ifs like i said my tahoe took my everywhere but my yota buddies rockcrawl way better with their solid axles there beefier than ifs of course upgrading steerings but i have found ifs will max out alot faster than solid axles

Well if you are planning on doing rock crawling with 35"+ plus tires you will need to obviously upgrade the suspension, hi-steer, ifs steering box, brake lines, etc.

Generally the 85' 4runners will have the price jacked up just for what they are, but like 2ndgen said finding a 86-89 and doing all the stuff yourself might be better. 86-89 are generally cheaper, plus i would look for one with a 5spd rather than the auto.

An SAS really is not that bad. If it boils down to money I would just see how much you can find an 86-89 for a solid front end should be no more than $300 and you will already have the steering box. Then you just need spring hangers, grinder, and welder.

Or if you can get the 85 for a good price go for it! I just look at it terms of $$$.

Hope that helps.

i appreciate all the input guys but explain why ifs steering box is better? i notice my friends leak alot one who has an 87' pick up with solid axle conversion meaning he still has ifs steering box and another friend with factory solid axle both leak ......

Age and improper maintenance?

IFS box is typically used for Hi-Steer/Crossover conversion. The factory SA's used the "push/pull" design.

I can't wait to ditch my push/pull :D

...and that's why my drag hits my u-bolts and locks up the steering sometimes when I flex.

Push pull steering goes to a funky "J" shaped steering arm on the drivers side knuckle.

Cross over is way better with a solid axle, and it takes an IFS steering box. You're friends box's are leaking because they need maintenance....

Yep. "They say" not supposed to use U bolt flip on the driver's side with push pull. I've always wondered who "they" are? ;)

Pics are worth a thousand words. :bounce:

"They say" it's smart to keep trail spare J arm with ya. I haven't broken one yet, but others have and I DO have a spare now... (c'mon hi-steer)

I'm in the same boat. I keep an extra j-arm and about every other steering component. I have the money to order hi-steer any time, but I live in an apartment and don't have any friends that weld and the local shops charge way too much for what I consider an easy project.

Well to help you find a 4x4 Yota just keep seaching your local and surrounding area CRAIGSLIST I will just look for fun in mine and always see good deals
I just did SAS on my 94 2 weeks ago I've had the truck for like 7-8 years though..

I agree with just trying to find a IFS truck pre 95 cuz you can find good deals on'em fairly easy, the coast to upgrade to a solid axle would be the same if not a lil cheaper plus you get a newer, stronger truck, AND the SAS takes just a few days to do if you got the time and all the right parts and tools

BAM!

OH and to find a axle I know of a guy on ebay that has solid axles all day long its like a freakin gold mine but he lives in NC I dont now where you are ....... I got mine from him payed 350 not the best deal but i've bought , sold, and seen allot of axles and the one I got was at least in really good shape I prob did not even need to change the races and bearings seals all that blabla
ANYWAY....
Good Luck with it
