Hi All, I am close to having a '87 Turbo 4Runner I bought last summer up and running. I need some help identifying the wires in the pic below.
First pic two black wires with weird ends on them come out of the tranny housing but I dont know where they go.
2nd pic there is 4 misc wires. One is green with yellow stripe, one is green with black stripe and then there are two wires which look Orange. One has a red stripe and one has a black stripe. These 4 wires come out of the harness in between the two intakes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have the wiring diagram from the FSM but just cant figure it out. Thank You very much!

I don't have a wiring harness manual for an 87, but there are numerous online resources for what you're looking for. Search for 87 4runner wiring harness (outside of ih8mud.com) you should be able to find it. Maybe someone else here has the diagram you're looking for. Also you might want to check Roger Brown's website he's has a huge amount of info there. Good luck.

Thanks, I've searched and searched......like I said, I have the FSM in PDF format but the electrical diagrams are the multi page folded type and they dont print out very usuable, especially when I am not very good at reading the diagrams in the first place, LOL. I guess its time to learn something new, thats why I like working on these things in the first place, always learning something. Thanks again for responding.

Did this truck use to have an auto tranny?

It does have an auto tranny. All the turbo models from the factory were equipped with autos I believe. Thanks for any help.

Not true. The famous R151F was the 5-speed behind the 22RET.

Off the top of my head ... those greens and whites look like fuel injector wires. I would need to pull the FSM to make sure. The black wires seem to have terminals on the end, like they were pulled from a connector. Stepping back with the camera so we can see location under the hood, and in relation to the harness would also help.

Thanks Pappy.....here is a shot from a little further back. Passenger side front wheel well. The two black wires on the left of the pic come from the passenger side of the tranny behind the brake line junction. I am not sure what the one wire is with the blue shrink wrap on it either.....?
Thanks again for the help!

Heres a pic of the rig I am working on.....pretty clean for a northeast ohio, saltbelt, 4Runner. I am excited to get it back on the road!

If possible could somebody take a picture of their wiring harness in this area and maybe I can figure it out that way.
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

I keep staring at your harness and I just can't figure out what's going on without having the ability to tug and yank. So, a few thoughts.

Your first pic, with the pair of black wires. Something tells me those are not OEM. The terminals look like GM Weatherpack terminals that have been bubba'd on. It looks like those wires are in their own sleeve so I would chase those to the source. Maybe something the PO added.

The white wires I still think are injector, but wired incorrectly, like somebody tried to "fix" them. On the far right side where they go out of view looks like the boot on an injector.

Here is a pic of my 1985 harness. Not sure if there is anything useful here.

Looking at that wiring harness more, I'd rip the whole thing out, cut it open and go through every wire and fix all of the crimps throughout it with solder and heat shrink.

Agree. I'm smelling a bunch of PO issues.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help and ideas and advice. I am back working on this issue today and will keep you posted with what I find. :crybaby:

So I have been beating my head against the wall for a day or so on these issues with minimal progress. I absolutely hate auto wiring. Reading the only FSM I have, which is for a '88 I have identified the following. The two all black wires with the messed up ends on them come out of the side of the auto trans housing. The connector that plugs into the auto trans is factory. In reading the manual I came across this the section that says when removing the auto tranny unplug the 3 connectors next to the starter. Well I have two plugs with the third plug being the two black wires from the NSS. What I can't find is what this plugs into if it had the good factory end on it??
I also ran across a push button located next to the ebrake handle in the cab. Tracing these wires I see it looks like the PO put a push button starter on this 4Runner. UGH.....more "customizing". One other thing that I did today was jumpered the fuel pump and verified that I have fuel at the rail which I do. I can hear the fuel pump kick on when I turn the key. However when I take the jumper out and turn the key I have no noise coming from the fuel pump. Another thing to chase now. I also discovered that the oil pressure switch located below the oil filter was not plugged in and I see no plug in sight that looks like it goes to it so now I have to identify this too.
At this point I think I might just remove the upper intake, get a wire harness that is not all hacked up and start over with good OEM connectors that are not broken and butchered up. Talk about feeling useless and spinning my wheels.........:censor::bang::censor::doh::poop::beer::beer:

Might be some sort of kill switch.

Normal. The fuel pump will not turn on unless there is a signal from the AFM showing air going through the engine. It's a safety thing so the pump kicks off when the engine stops.

Thanks for the clarification Pappy. So I took out the pushbutton stop/start button all together. The 4Runner turns over just fine with the key. Looking at the parts diagram for the tranny it appears the two solid black wires are the tranny fluid temp gauge wires. I traced them all the way to the tranny and they are definately OEM as they are part of the temp unit, the PO just fubared up the ends. Now I just have to figure out what they plug into.

The two green wires and the two other wires I am still trying to figure out.

A couple things I did verify in my air/fuel/spark tests are that the spark plug wire ends are shot at the distributor. Somebody has pulled the wires off the distributor by the wire part and they are all messed up. So I ordered a new rotor, dist cap and wireset. I put new plugs in it yesterday. No spark though and today I know why. When I had the plug out I screwed in my compression tester but was only able to achieve 50lbs of pressure in cylinder #3. Obviously this isnt good so now I am thinking when PO did timing belt he has it timed wrong or 180 out or worst case I have some bent valves. Going to look up timing procedure and do this tomorrow.

I have a clean air filter and unobstructed flow of air to the throttle body. I tested the resistance on the fuel injectors and they are 1.9 Ohms. I do have good fuel pressure at the line that goes into the intake as well.

So my next steps are new tuneup parts and timing check and take it from there. I feel like I am getting closer, especially when I find other parts that are no good. Makes me think I should have checked all this first! Thanks for any help and guidance, its appreciated.

Obviously this isnt good so now I am thinking when PO did timing belt ...

Glad you are making progress. Sounds like a little base-lining is in order. Also, just so you know, the 22r/re/ret series of engines do not have a timing belt. They have a chain.

So I figured I'd prep for timing this motor and pull the valve cover. Looks like moisture in there to me. This motor sat with no coolant in it for at least a year or so until about a week ago when I filled it up. Its never started, only cranked over. Thoughts??

If that were me I'd be pulling the whole motor and going through every inch of it turbo'd or not. I will admit I'm jealous you have a turbo 4runner.
