Congrats on landing a 77!!

What was the part number on the windshield you bought from Radd and how much?

Can anyone confirm that 56111-60220 fits a 1990 HZJ77? In the EPC it's matched to 96 and newer but my parts guy thinks it's a fit for the earlier build dates, replacing 90K03/14.

Also, is there a part number for the gasket with the chrome trim that someone referenced - where is the glass shop sourcing it if not Toyota?

i am assuming toyodiy told you that.
Call John @ Radd Cruisers or John @ Rocky Mountain Imports.
I know ICBC got a windshield for my dads 73 and 70 without issue.

Peter you have a P.M. coming as well.

all fixed windshields are the same from 1985 to 2010all fold down windshields are the same from 1985 to 1998 and i suspect to 2011 on the special order 79 series with fold down windshields...

enough info?

Thanks Wayne.

56111-60220 it is then - for a hefty $545 from my local Toyota dealer... ouch!

that sounds quite high, last time i checked you could get one from payless glass for $300 installed ...
might want to call around.

actually, where are you located?
i have new takeouts for $200 each in Ontario...

Wayne, Thanks for the tip on payless - I'll see if I can source one nearby for that price, installed. Maybe in Ottawa... If I not, I'll gladly take one off your hands at $200 - fantastic price!! I'm in Deep River/Pembroke - wrong side of the park or else I'd buy it from you right now. Would shipping to the Ottawa Valley be an option and at what cost? I'll pm you with another question...

And damn that Troopy build keeps me up at night - spectacular work!!

Peter

Peter,
thanks for the compliment on the troopy
as for shipping, not a chance. i have seen some of the glass that has been shipped and it ain't pretty.
got your message, please email waynesmith2501@hughes.net
cheers

Does Dobson make a complete kit for the J77? The previous owner installed the OME kit in mine, but i understood that the rear leaf pack is a different length than the other 70 series. Mine has the original main leaf and then the OME installed under that.

regular 70 series springs on the front.
76 series springs on the back. They are the same length.... Jan Alsen did this on his pzj77.

My 77 feels basically the same as my 81. Maybe a bit better tippy wise.

As for 77s, I wonder how many are factory locked in the country:)

Sorry took so long to respond. Mine is factory locked.

Yes I redid the suspension on my '91 PZJ77. It was almost going negative on the front. Thanks to Wayne (is the crushersrule.com email not working?) for putting me on to Dobinson in OZ, where I got a digital catalogue off their site and found that the P/N for the rear leafs for the 77 was the same as a 76 and the front leafs are the same for most 70s. So I got the really HD front leafs for a 75 and the HD rear for the 76. Shipping from OZ after several emails with Chris (owner of Dobinson) ended up being way too much (mid 2Ks) with duty and S&H, taxes, etc. So I called ARB in Renton, WA and got a total OME setup (~ 1/2 as much). Took a bit to get them to USA but worth it.

After watching and assisting (minimal) Wayne (thanks again!) install my suspension in the my former 73 series, I knew well how to do it. Perhaps not as fast as Wayne but it went in OK. Hardest part was taking off the old Steering Stabilizer. Now that it has been on there for about 2 years or so, it has been great. I also used the new Nitro sport shocks, much better than the old ones.

Question: is the 77 club just the HZj or are PZJ's included?

While we are on the 77s, I have two small issues you might be able to help with:

  1. I am getting a bit of white smoke on cold starts in the mornings. Any idea what this could be due to? Doesn't happen except for cold starts, once warm starts fine no smoke at all.

  2. Leaking diff fluid from transfer case /tranny area, have replaced all pinion like seals front and back, redid PTO cover gasket and plumber taped the bolts. Could it be the plate between the transfer case and tranny? if so, is this a tough/easy job and what do you recommend for gasket...PVR?

Thanks in advance, Jan

BTW: Fuel economy on the flat stretches across the desert in USA and MX, I get anywhere from 7.6-8.5 L/100 kms doing my steady 85 kph. about 1100 kms per tank (90L). Turbo (installed by Wayne for the former owner) rarely boosts except when pushing the truck a lot or up hill. Maxed out around 10PSI.

Cody (thanks tons!) and I worked on it recently took the rod out from the waste gate control and shortened it by about 0.5 cm and re-installed. The rod was bumping each end inside the hex nut (~1" long). Upped the fuel about a full turn and get about 13 psi now and still EGTS are about 6-800F when at 85 kph. A bit of black smoke so I turned it back a 1/2 turn and now she is fine. Boost climbs up faster now then it did.

Your in the 77 club in my books.

Problem #1: injectors in my books
Problem #2: Might have to rebuild your transfer case. What kms are you at?

As for your boosting, careful not to boost too high without an intercooler.

These trucks get good fuel economy with a bit of discipline (good driving habits) and skinny tires. I have got my 77 driving at 85kms/h getting 9.3l/100kms. If I didn't mess up leaving town and having to go back in for a forgotten item I am sure I could have gotten into the 8L/100km range.

My hometown is pretty hilly and I don't get the best fuel economy around town. Usually 550-600kms per fill up roughly.
Between 11.5 and 12.5 litre per 100kms with normal driving where I am being a bit conscious. Can always get a bit worse with bad driving habits:grinpimp: In the 10L/100kms range on the highway driving 95-100kms an hour. In all honesty when people ask fuel economy they are a bit shocked.

I am curious to see how this all is affected when I get rid of 285s and swap to 255s.
Marks overdrive gears would probably help a bit as well, so will the turbo...

Will check out your suggestions ForealBoreal. Many thanks for your prompt response.

As for the boost, rarely get over 5-8 PSI normal driving.

I have 33x10.5x15 BFG ATs which work out quite well as they last a good number of kms (>50,000 kms) and are readily available at any tire shop, Costco or Wal-mart, should one need a replacement.

Yes my driving surrounds here are quite similar and I too get the look when people ask about the fuel economy. Can't believe my rig is 20 years old.

HZJ77 1998 Back disc brake issues

:bang: Hi ladies and gentlemen, I have a wee problem with my back disc brakes on this model, i have pulled apart the master cylinder seals (fine) pulled apart back disc calipers, and bled the whole brake pipes and what ever the valve is called above the back differential ( i guess thats for smooth braking when rear of cabin lifts and back brake detentions a touch (damper i guess)) so would anyone have experience with this model to help on this subject?

Any help is welcome, it’s not easy living in Mongolia with the type of bush mechanic
has no idea how to fix.

Many thanks

describe the issue you are having?
no brakes
weak brakes
brakes locking up?

that cylinder on the frame above the rear axle is for when the back is loaded with weight, it modifies the braking ratio front to rear.

cheers

HZJ77 1998 Back disc brake issues

Hi Crushers,

The back brake callipers are working contracting a little but only about 1/4 of the capacity of the front, they are not retracting as much, i can hear the pads just rubbing on the discs and making a scratching noise. quite annoying sound!
I had it tested on the torque and braking tester and they failed back brakes.
their’s no brake fluid leaking at all, Mongolia gets to about −40C and i’m wondering if i had water in the lines at some stage and froze may have built up with crap and blocked and staid that way or their is another problem.
Do you think it may be the master cylinder, the bore does not seem to be scored at all, you don’t happen to have a breakdown view of the master cylinder so i can check to see if the owner before me didn’t install it wrong, as far as i am aware the locking nut on the bottom of the cylinder is on the inside of the bucket shaft that holds it in the cylinder. Thanks for the info on the valve cylinder above axle!

cheers,

it sounds like that valve that Crushers mentioned before. I had problems with mine in my BJ70. The part is expensive and for what I was using my BJ70 for I wasn't able to justify the cost so just tweaked it instead. Bent it up so it thought the rear axle always had full weight on the back. Not perfect but works. Perhaps a temporary fix seeing how it might be a wait for parts to be delivered to your location? iirc it was $150 part. I wouldn't hesitate to spend that on my HZJ77 but not so much on a winter beater to be driven to work and back.

Hi Crusher/77cruiser77,

Well now that i remember i replaced the rear leaf springs about a year ago and honestly did not notice the brakes failure but however this is a good point from you guys because i was looking at that to but not taking into mind the extra 1” of lift the springs give me, i honestly did not know that valve was on their and could be effected that way. this will be the first thing i will modify when it stops raining.

cheers guys i’ll let you know if that was the problem.

While I can't speak for all of your southern neighbors, at least one is very jealous. :)

Well i can take the comment a few ways but i’ll just go with the one thats not so incriminating to the neighbours, if i had an extra inch i would be famous! and probably rich but that just keeps me in the average field! cheers:beer:

Bit of an update:

The HZJ77 is a brilliant platform and suits my needs very well. For the past while I have not done much but drive it and try and figure out what exactly do I need and what would look nice but would never be utilized. I once thought that drawers would be a priority for me but now I don't want them at all. My wife and I love dogs and we now have two very large, and still growing, Newfoundland's. If I had drawers installed the dogs would have to stay behind and that's just not an option for me.

I'm thinking I may put in some seats from a LJ78 since they have a split bi-fold seat instead of the awful space wasting solid bench that came stock in mine.

When I got this I originally had 145k on the odo but now I am approaching 200k so I'll be doing my rear brakes with new calipers, pads and disks. New thermostat and water pump will be installed along with timing belt, fan belts, and all fluids will be changed too. BEBs are already done.

Within the last 4 or so months I've done some other small things. My suspension was completely bagged out. The shocks were covered in fluid so I knew they were shot, the bushings were disintegrating and pieces were falling out the sides, and the spring pack probably dipped a mere inch in the middle between the eyes after they were removed. I ended up installing new OME bushings and about to put in OME shocks (I wanted bilstien but couldnt find any to fit my application) along with some Zeal springs I purchased off a PZJ77. Thank you Steve at EBI for setting me up.

With the lift it was the perfect time to throw on new tires and wheels. I never did like my 15" rims. The tires don't have as many plys and the weight rating is much lower than a D or E rated tire that would go on a 16" rim. I found that the Mickey Thompson Classic III made a decent looking aluminium rim in a 16x8 with 3 5/8" backspacing. I wrapped them in Toyo Open Country M/T measuring in at 255/85/16. I am very impressed with how quiet the tires are and how well they handle so far on the road. (Sorry no shocks so no off roading yet)

Just to jazz it up a little I happened to stumble upon an interesting ad on craigslist. Talked it over with my wife and she thought it sounded like the coolest thing she's ever seen. within a couple weeks we were on the road to Vancouver to get a Maggiolina Airtop RTT.

Now that I have the lift and tires so I can go places without the concern of ripping off my rear bumper I look forward to being able to push it a little harder but there are two things that hold it back right now. 1) no lockers 2) it needs a turbo.

Turbo I hope to install by the end of the month and will do a lot of updates when that time comes as I go along. I'll be installing a Gturbo which has been on my shelf for almost a year with a 3" SS exhaust. Most of the major parts I have or will be arriving in the mail soon.

My small shop which is large enough to store my things in but not large enough to work is getting full of parts to install. I suppose that would make it a shed but I've never had a shop before so I'm calling it a shop just so I can say that I have one. Unfortunately I injured my knee so I'll be in crutches for most of the summer. Progress will not be stopped only drastically delayed.

Pictures to come
