My first ever engine swap.....!!!!!

Ok guys I found this info on another forum and I'll be testing and see if that gets this code problem solved..

"There are 2 fuses (INJ1 & INJ2), one for each bank of injectors which provide continuous voltage to the injector driver coils.
The PCM fires the injectors by temporarily grounding the other side of the diver coil.
Code P0200 indicates that one of the driver circuits is open.
There are 8 circuits to chose from, but the PCM is not indicating which one is causing trouble.
The problem could be in the wiring or the injector itself. Get a set of NOID lites and attach them to each injector, Run the engine and check that all lites are blinking.
A dark lite or a steady lite indicate a problem with that cylinder.
1) A dark lite indicates an open circuit, unplug connector from injector and test as indicated::

Check injector drive coil with an Ohm meter for continuity (11-14 Ohm)
Check for steady 12 Volts from supply circuit (Pink wire)
Check for pulsing ground on lead coming from PCM (Various two color wires)

2) Steady ON lite indicates a steady ground on lead from PCM
Look for steady ground from lead coming from PCM
"

Ok guys.. I went to get me a set of cheap NOID lights and tested each FI plug...
all of them checked out but one.... I believe is number 6.
Passenger side second from the fire wall...no blinking light came on....

I havent checked the Injector drive coil but that's the next step... any of you swap savvy guys know what could be causing this ?

At least I know where the problem is....now !!

I not really knowledgable on that engine but could you simply have a bad coil pack for that cylinder? Maybe I'm wrong here...The PCM fires the injectors? Looks like time to invest in a GM shop manual.

I assume there are no other PCM codes that are being set? If you have a freind that is a mechanic or works in a GM shop you might get them to drop by and check it with the TECH-2 scan tool. It has a number of built in test modes.

Elbert.... I wish I had a buddy with such tool..but I dont....
I was thinking along the same lines... The coil pack might of gone south...............

Yeah on the manual.........
Thanks for the in put.. sounds like im going the right direction....

Laters,

Manu

Ok, here we found the problem with INJECTOR PLUG number 6 not getting 12v feed....

Fuel Injection Specialties.... Quality Control at its finest !!!!
P7170250 (Medium).webp

She should be running on 8 cylinders by the end of the day.....

After paying $1000.00 + we had to peel half of the harness and find where this wire broke off !!!

Woooo hoooo for FIS !!!!.............................NOT !!!!!!:flipoff2::flipoff2:

Frank, send FIS that photo and a link to this page. See if they remedy it for you.

YEAH they will make it right! But if they don't know about it they can't fix it on the next one. If that is their portion. I know that was the original harness and it was maodified. But if they did it they will take care of you,. Good thing is you are firing on all 8!

Maybe FIS stands for Fix It Shortly!

Glad you found the trouble...maybe that's why it was running a little rough?

Man, if it had a lot of power before, now it's going to FLY!

Good, at least you found the source of the problem. Does that picture show like 4 wires feeding off one?
Sorry to hear about the crappy harness. Hope the MFG will make it right...would be a major pain in the @$$ to pull the hanress and replace it though....

Manuchao great to see you are getting everything worked out. I have decided to do the same to my 88 FJ62. I would like to thank you and everyone involved with your build for the inspiration to tackle this as I will be doing most of this by myself since I am still new to my current location. But have a few wrenches at work that enjoy challenges. Enjoy the Vortec as I am sure I will once I am done. Thanks, Jack

That sucks!!

I went with SpearTech. No problems so far

Yeah it sucks A$$.....
But fear not.... I had Peter gave me a hand and we made it right..!!

Frank, send FIS that photo and a link to this page. See if they remedy it for you.

Shane.. I will... but not just yet....!!
and dont sell !!

Randy you are right.. they did modified the harness.... it is their work, we know cause we called them and spoke with the dude that does the wiring... at this point it is unrealistic to take out the harness and send it to them... We peeled it off and sure enough, as we found the one wire splice into the four for the second bank the one wire just fell off...... I must say I was quite disappointed at their workmanship.... Im glad their tech support is not that bad :flipoff2::flipoff2: at least not yet :grinpimp::grinpimp:.

Im still getting an engine light.. Now Im getting a P0481.
Its the relay to the engine fan.. it cycles twice (light goes on).

Im afraid I'll have to sen them the PCM back as I only have one fan yet it has two relays one for labeled "fan relay" and the other labeled "fan relay control"...:confused:

My Scangauge II reads im going twice the speed (90 miles an hour when Im doing 45 miles).
I know they had some issues with communicating with the PCM......so we'll see how everything pans out.....
I think I got caught at a time when (Jeff) was leaving FIS. He no longer works there... so I think more than one person work on my PCM and I think that's where the confusion might come from.....
Its all good tho'... I'm sure they will work with my issues as they have so far !!!

Jose, you are right.... I knew it was running a tad rough (i knew that, really I did....) you should see it now.... it smooth like butter.... It used to have a lag when ever I put the pedal to the metal.....not no more.. the pick up its simply amazing !!!
It idles so smooth.... nothing rattles any more...!!!

Thanks Elbert.. yeah as I said earlier..no point on taking it out... Its "more better" to fix it there and then.. we peeled about 18" off of the harness and found the problem got a soldering gun and made it all good !!!!
I was going to use some of that 99¢ store electrical tape but PETER made me go out and get some of the expensive scotch brand electrical tape:rolleyes:

Thanks Jack... glad to know you are taking the plunge...that's the only reason I let Jose drive it... we'll see if it works......

Thanks for all the encouragement guys.....

Peter thanks for driving all the way out here bud....
really appreciate it... I'll drive out there from now on..
You rock dude !!!
I'll keep yah posted as to how things turn out with FIS....

Laters,

Manu !!

Ok, I called FIS explained what's going on... waiting to hear back from them....:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

In other news... Im looking for a AC shop locally... Greater LA area....
I visit the one I used last year but the guy working there today mentioned it was illegal to mate Japanese lines to American lines.. I dont know if he was a chevy purist or doing crack...or both...:confused:

I drove in the freeway today and hit 85 mph !!!:steer::steer::bounce::bounce:

Any info on a AC shop that could do this work would be great......
Thanks everyone and ya'll have a great weekend...

don't see how its illegal to "mate" hoses.... CA does have some wierd rules from what I hear... I vote
that "crack" was invovled :)

So, I got my Scangauge II and Im pretty stoked about how it shows all the info at the touch of a button.. this thing is freaking saweeet !!

Check the pics...
Showing RPM, water temp, tranny oil temp and MPH...

Hi all, do they make this scan gauge for 1988 TBi chevy?? i looked on the we site but it was for only for 1996 and newer. any help?

Hey Chappy,

No that is only for OBDII cars (1996) and later. However you can can a scanner (not a code reader) for a OBD I car. I use one for my truck I have a 1990 TPI engine. It gives you a lot of information but not nearly as much as the OBD II scanners. If you want to come by and try mine I am close to you. I am in Simi Valley (about 15-20 min from the Navy base).

Dynosoar:zilla:

Frank. I used Salerno in Burbank, but he's an old timer - that means he's grumpy, slow, and grumpy. maybe swing by and see if he's into it. I also got a "quote" from the guy TLC uses, but I'm certain he was quoting double what he charges them. He told me nearly $1000.00!!!!! I drove away.

Thanks guys...
Ferd got me info on this local guy and I will take it there, but before that....
I'll have to ship the ECU back to FIS so they can work on the last code P0481.
I think I'll have them delete the whole Fan relay and I'll be running a Delta Current Control.
