I finally purchesed my first 55. As a previous 40 owner, I have been skulking around these boards for about a year now, wishing I could find a decent 55 that I could use as my outdoor fun family truckster. Then getting lost one day abut a month ago, spotted this in a field on a back road, and now it's mine!
A few initial obsevations:
The good:
Rare California 1979: Factory Air and Factory Power Steering (yes, its true)
Axle gearing: 3:70...better highway gears
Floorbards not rusted through anywhere
Complete original drivetrain
Glass complete, but cracked windshield
The not so good:
Standard Pig rust: Need somebody work. The worst of it is the drivers side front lower fender. Raingutter looks good, though. Also has some pretty significant damage to pass side rear pillar from some sort of collision with a tree, I think.
Engine not currently running: The previous owner's smog pump froze, burning the belt, and he stopped immediately. After some feeble attempts at repairing, he gave up on this pig. So I have some investigation to do to ge this thing fired up. He tore the smog pump apart, and pulled the guts out, so now it's a free spinning pulley.
It has been de-smogged somewhat by prevous owners, so this also will take some investiagtion. It has the stock dizzy, and a weber carb, which I just put a tune-up kit in.
So like all pig owners, I have alot of work to do, but a happy to have finally joined the ranks. I will be asking alot of questions, and am looking forward to the process.
YooHooo! I own a pig!
