Builds My '78 FJ40 "44"

Several MUDbrothers have suggested that we need a winch... even though we carry a Hi-lift and a Come-Along, every time we go out.

I finally broke down, while we were in Austin, and bought a 9000lb Harbor Freight Badlands Winch, with Hitch Receiver Cradle Mount and Wireless Remote for $259 and free shipping. They made me an offer I couldn't refuse!.

I don't want to permanently mount a winch on 44 and this will allow me to share it between 44 and my Tundra (it has hitch receivers, front and back).

I mounted the winch on the cradle mount and mounted the whole enchilada on 44's front receiver. Then I opened the hood, turned off my battery switch (no strain on 44's wiring) and connected the + & - cables to the battery and pulled out about 10' of cable. Then stepped back and used the remote to reel it back in - everything works fine!

I only have this one picture thus far - cables aren't as neat as a bumper mounted winch, but it will only be mounted when/if I need it.

The little square box is the wireless transmitter/receiver... I need to decide whether I want to mount it to the winch or carry it with the remote, in the glove box.

Great looking winch Danny! You may want to consider a land anchor for those areas in the bush that are free of boulders to attach to.

Just wait a short time. Chester will become a teenager and then all you will need to do is harness him to 44 when help is needed.

Looking great Danny! Just got my carb back from Jim....not in yet though. First a new brake booster and master...........

Thanks Tom! Glad to hear you are 'getting there'... and 'thanks' to Mike ( @78fj40mg ) for helping you!!

After twenty years of shaving, in the Air Force,

Taking my time enjoying your thread when I happened upon ^^^. Seems like these old "war horses" (TLC's) seemed to own one or two old war horses...;)

Thanks for your service!!!

@Chungas Revenge Thank you, Sir!! I have a distinct feeling that I should "Thank you for your service!!!".

I thoroughly enjoy your thread as well!!

Your mention of "...driving...in North Africa" took me back to my time (Dec '68-Mar '70) in Libya - I was fortunate to have spent those formative years in Libya (including Kadaffi overthrowing King Idras, Labor Day '69), rather than Viet Nam.

But, knowing that... never makes me feel less guilty for all my peers, whose lives were lost or destroyed in SE Asia, while I was basking in the Mediterranean sun...

It's a shame that, now that the Libyans are out from under a 4-decade dictator, and finally have an opportunity to come into their own... they have been sucked into yet another abyss...

But, I digress... once again... Thank you!!

Danny, if I may.....I don't really think it matters where or when in the kingdom you served....point is, you served. Also, I don't mean to belabor the point, but I was/am taken aback by the number of new/and not so new vets that find their way to these machines.......It is amazing!!! I've been searching these old threads to try and find a post on the forum dedicated to servicemen and their TLC's...May be a good opportunity for a "call to arms" of sorts...:hmm:

Yep... I think military, both former and current, have an affinity for these old beauties... especially when they find out dependable they are and how easy they are to maintain.

I LIKE your idea!! It could be homed, as a thread, in the Chit Chat forum.. or, we could lobby @woody (he's offline) or a Moderator, like @Mace (he's online) about how to start a Forum for Vets and their Toys or some such name.

Agreed!! Its a great idea for either a thread in Chit Chat or a Forum of it's own.

I don't see why it couldn't be a thread in Chit Chat... but threads roll off the first screen... it would be more visible and, therefore, more likely to catch MUDders' attention if it was it's own forum.

I copied Mace and Woody in my post, above... lets see what they say and go from there.

They can post their 'wants' in my thread.

Well done sir, well done. A toast to a new thread on a dedicated forum....I think this will be a thread to rival all threads!!!

Danny - There is a freeway here in WV called the "Veterans Highway"..Kinda catchy... in a double entendre sort of way...Vets/TLC's/stories etc etc....:hmm:

Give me a vector? Am I tracking?

I like it!! Veterans Highway is Hwy 95 in Nevada... probably one in most every state...makes sense to have one in MUD!!

I have to be gone all day for DR appts today... let's see if we hear from @woody or @Mace about this.

Woody/Mace/et al. We want to create a new forum, called "Veterans' Highway", to home all things 'Veteran'. It makes sense to have it's own forum because it needs to be easily seen by everyone who visits MUD. If it's only a thread in (say) Chit Chat, it will roll off the screen and many MUDders will not even be aware of it. Thoughts??

Thank you!

You tagged Woody on this, and it's up to him to decide on the new forum (possibly in the clubhouse section??). For now, I don't see any reason not to post up a thread in Chat and see if it's worth a sticky.

Mace

Thanks @Mace - knew it would ultimately be up to Woody - we'll see what he says.

I'll start a quick thread in Chat and then I've got to get on the road to Henderson for Dr Appts.

Thanks!

Danny, Chungas, I'm not a vet, but I SUPPORT your idea! My Dad was in the Pacific Navy fleet during WWII.
