G'day Mudders and Happy New Year,

Work continues on the transfer case. I was hoping to just put new seals and gaskets into it. But, I reckon I may as well put in new bearings and idler shaft. I found lots of tiny chrome flakes after I washed it down and I'm pretty sure it came from the idler shaft.

Killin it!

Fast forward, May 2016. If you thought this was going to be one of those very satisfying before-and-after threads you will be very disappointed. I have rebuilt lots of sub assemblies, but still have plenty of hard work ahead of me. This week the chassis goes in for sand blasting and hopefully I'll get it painted next weekend and I can start the reassembly process.

P.S. One of the reasons it has taken so long is that I have no bloody idea what I'm doing.

hmmm, the sixth post of the thread. now 20 pages later and you are embarrassing the rest of us. personally one of my favourites this build. keep up the good work!

G'day Fellas,

Thanks for the very nice comments. It is proving to be a long slog and your positive feedback provides plenty of motivation. I'm really looking forward to getting the engine and gearbox back in the chassis. I reckon that will be a pretty significant milestone.

Cheers,

Ben

I also catalogued the transfer case hardware and hopefully over the weekend I get it cleaned up on the wire wheel ready for plating. This is my usual process and has proved helpful in putting things back together. It can also be done in front of the TV............it's a bit like knitting for blokes.

Tonight, I stripped the transmission mounted handbrake. I'll give it a wire wheel outside over the weekend to avoid covering everything in the shed with dust and rust particles. I know already that this thing is going to be a bastard to put back together.

G'Day Ben,
Things are progressing nicely on your build mate. Steady on and she'll be done before you know it. What do you use to clean the aluminum items? I've never seen aluminum that clean without being media blasted.

CLEANING ALUMINIUM

G'day Michael,

I've had a couple of questions about cleaning aluminium. I use a mixture a bits and pieces - scrotbrite pads, dishwashing detergent, degreaser, wire wheels, aluminium wheel cleaner (Mothers or Eagle One apparently), CT18 Truck Wash and fine grade sand paper.

But, the secret weapon was liquid cream cleanser combined with steel wool..........the stuff you use to clean your bath and shower. I would also mix it into a slurry and dip the pointy wire wheel on the cordless drill into it. The slurry cleaned well and if you use a slow speed you don't seem to damage the alloy.

At the end of the day it was mainly elbow grease. I probably spent between 3 and 4 hours on the bell housing. I literally scrubbed it until my finger tips bled. Next time I reckon some rubber gloves might come in handy!

Cheers,

Ben

Ben, are the wire wheels your using brass? Hard to tell in the pictures. I've recently started using brass instead of steel wire wheels and was pleasantly surprised to find they work significantly better on both aluminium and steel, although they do wear out a little quicker. I'll definitely be trying to source those cleaners or equivalent here. Thanks for posting the info.

There's no substitution for good old fashioned hard work. No short cuts in that process and the results speak for them selves. Thanks for sharing mate!
