Thanks Ben! My 45 may be the first Toyota I've built but it's not my first rodeo! It would be a very comfortable ride across country but also a very expensive ride. The 68' only gets about 13 mpg.

That 2H is going to look fine when your finished with it!

That donk is whistle clean!

Phase 8.3: The Engine. Continued: Well, it's been a while since I updated this thread. Basically, I've been scraping gasket surfaces and more scraping gasket surfaces. Cataloguing nuts and bolts and more cataloguing nots and bolts. Here are a few pics.

The original paint on the engine backing plate was pretty well preserved, so I used it to test a couple of colours. The top blue was my first choice, which is Ford blue. It's a nice blue but very different to the original colour. The bottom of the plate is the GM blue. Better, but not perfect.

Hey Ben, the 'gator and I will be in Kangaroo Valley 24th - 28th December. Should try meet up. I've sent you a PM.

Phase 8.3 The Engine: I'm going to get some of the aluminium components, such as the valve cover, oil cooler and thermostat housing hydro-blasted. The guy who runs the business says the cleaner the parts, the quicker the process, so hopefully I'll save a few bucks. My local diesel mechanic suggested I use 'Mothers' or 'Eagle One' brand aluminium cleaner. It seems to work pretty well.

TORQUE SETTINGS: Can anyone explain this to me. How do I work out the torque setting for bolts without a number on the head? The first bolt with the number '6' on the head is 8mm in diameter with a thread pitch of 1.25. Using the table in Engine Repair manual I can tell the specified torque is setting is between 11-15 ft-lb. The smaller bolt doesn't have a number embossed on its head. Just two little lines. How does work?

Phase 8.3. The Engine: I pulled the engine of the stand tonight and fitted a new rear main seal and rear main seal retainer gasket. The Engine Manual showed an image of the seal being fitted to the retainer and then the retainer and seal being installed. This worked okay. I took a quick pic because I like pretty new red things! Kind of like a fishing lure, except for blokes.

Check torque settings on each part, not each bolt?

That housing looks very nice. How long did it take you to do it?

Phase 8.3 The Engine: I managed to get a couple of hours in over the weekend. Most of this was spent wire wheeling bits and pieces that attach to the outside of the engine.......water pump housing, engine mounts, crankshaft pulley etc. I had forgotten how painful it was being speared by little bits of wire from the angle grinder. You feel a bit like voodoo doll.
