I got a couple of small things done over the weekend. The radiator support and shroud are bolted in. I'll have to pluck'em out before the engine goes in. But it gets them out of the way in the meantime. I also installed the new rear brake drums.

I also had a bit of fun tonight after the kids went to bed. When I was cleaning up the rear springs you could make out the original part number and a '+' symbol stencilled onto the spring. So, I decided to have a crack at recreating it. Overall, pretty happy with the outcome. I didn't want them to look perfect..........which is good because they are far from it, but I reckon this makes them look a bit more factory like.

Hi Ben,
Could you post some good pictures of your vacuum canister in my build thread please? My truck never had one and I need some good reference photos for my installation.

Cheers!

Here is a tip. Don't pull the brake proportioning mechanism to bits unless you really, really have too. The little springy-clirclip thing was a pain in the arse to get back into place. I had to replace the rubber boot and had no choice. There was swearing, tool chucking, crying, stuff got kicked, more swearing and the LandCruiser Gods copped an earful. I eventually, used an old bullet shell to hold the clip open. I don't actually own a gun, which is probably good because this thing would have been taken behind the shed and shot.

Phase 8.3: The engine. (I was actually going to call it Phase 2. But, that made it sound as though I have only just started. So iI'm calling it Phase 8.3)

I rolled out the engine tonight and took a bunch of pics. About 170 images to be precise. I'm a bit anxious about pulling it to bits and not being able to put it back together again. I picked up the repair manual on ebay a while back. I'm pretty sure it will come in handy.

Hey Cult, I reckon I'll stick with the diesel. They are slow, they smell and they don't have much get up and go.............a bit like myself. So at this point in time the 2H stays. What's happening on the set?

Come on Ben! They don't have to be slow and stinky. They can be fast and stinky!!!

I just sold my 2H last week.

I got a couple of hours in today. I removed the alternator, thermostat housing, water pump, engine mounts, lifting brackets and bunch of other things bolted to engine. I then taped of the exhaust manifold ports and bolted up the exhaust manifold then taped and plugged a few other holes. After this I rolled it outside and used all manner of toxic chemical to clean it down.

Nice job of getting it cleaned up Ben! What is your plan for the gaskets/packing that go between the tub and the upper cab at the back? Will you reuse the old gaskets?

Looks ready for a squirt mate! If only there was an online video with the basics of how to paint.. ;)

I'm not sure. The upper rear panel was extensively rusted. I don't know if one of the gaskets was damaged or not installed properly. I'll wait until I get to that (sometime in 2025) and then give them a good scrub with a stiff brush and some soapy water and do a more thorough assessment.

Phase 8.3: The Engine continued......

I got out in the shed tonight and took a few shots of a couple of bits I had stripped last night. The upper and lower thermostat housing appears to be toast. The three bolts that joint them together sheared straight off and it is pretty badly corroded.

Nice work Ben. Luck for you those housings are still available. I asked about your plans on the cab gaskets because I wanted to know if the straight piece is still available down under?
